THE WOOL COMMANDEER
SURPRISE IN AUCKLAND By Telegraph—Press Associations Auckland, November 9. • The cable message statins that Mr. Massoy and Sir Joseph AY a r<l were conferring with Mr. Lloyd George regarding the proposal that all New Zealand crossbred wool should bo taken over by the Imperial Government came as a : surprise, to Auckland brokers and 'growers. The latest advices received ;by the brokers did not indicate any ?such action being contemplated. Recent letters stated that the Colonial :JVool Importers' Association in London .was keeping in close touch with the ,Director of Army Contracts, and that - there was no indication of any intention on tho part of the Imperial authorities to take over the Australasian clip. The British Government's main object in regulating the disposal of wool supplies —that of ensuring the necessary sup-. ply for requirements of the British, and Allied Armies, and of exercising certain control over prices—was considered' to have been sufficiently obtained by the commandeering' of the homo clip and tho maintenance of the present embargo ■regulating exports from Australia and New Zealand. The embargo permits "exports to Great Britain, with limited permits for small shipments to other countries. The measure of control that .was thus being exorcised was considered to ba sufficient. The fact that it has lately been -understood that permission would be granted to export crutcliings and some finer wool to America also tended to confirm tho existing iin- , oression. •
