FRENCH COUP
ANOTHER BRILLIANT SCORE ON THE SOMME
TWO VILLAGES CARRIED ITALIAN NAVAL RAID A PLUCKY EXPLOIT TWO GERMAN BATTLESHIPS TORPEDOED S?;- The French on the Somme have added fresh laurels to their recent achievements by a brilliant assault, which resulted in the capture of the enemy's trench positions and two villages. The attack and its results were the more noteworthy in that the enterprise was . carried out in heavy rain. An Italian torpedo boat flotilla has achieved a daring exploit at Pola, creeping through the enemy's mine-field to close range of six Austrian battleships. The torpedoes most disappointingly exploded on the torpedo netting. The Italians returned safely, and later had the satisfaction of sinking an Austrian transport. The Russians in Galicia are continuing to make progress, and tho Austrian s are giving ground on that part of the line which lies towards tho Rumanian flank. The enemy's pressure on the Rumanian front is still severe at certain points. The nows from other fronts is not of material moment.
