ARBITRATION COURT

COMPENSATION CASE AND AAVAED

MATTERS. A claim for compensation was heard by tho Court of Arbitration yesterday. The claimant was Michael Lyons, aseaman who had been engaged' on the stoamer Moana. Lyons met with an accident at Papeete on February 14. It was stated that lie had been asboro and that on returning he stepped aside on the gangway to allow- someone to pass by, over-balanced, and fell into the harbour. In tho courso of the fall he struck the wharf, dislocated his shoulder, and rendered himself unconscious. Ho claimed compensation for . total disablement from February 24 till May 31. "

The defcnco was that claimant's fall was attributable to his being under tho influence of liquor. Evidence was called to' that effect, and the Court held that the defence sot up had been established. Therefore, tho claim was not allowed. ' Mr. P. J. O'Regan appeared for the claimant, and Mr. P. Levi for the Union Company (defendants). TYPOGRAPHICAL CASE. Friday next was fixed as the day for 'directions in regard to the typographical case. Mr. , J. M'Dougall, secretary of tho Wellington Typographical Union said that the, position was somewhat involved, and it was desired that the whole circumstances should be placed before the Court. Tho employers wanted separate awards, and the union wanted a Dominion award. < SLAUGHTERMEN'S DISPUTE. Regarding the Wellington Slaughtermen's dispute, Mr. M. J. Reardon (secretary of the union) informed the Court that a complete agreement had been arrived at in the country districts, and the unions desired to. have the agreement mado into an award. Mr. Pryor, representing the employers, asked to have the matter dealt with on Thursday. So ~ far as ho knew thcro would be no objection to' tho agree : ment, but he wanted'to consult each employer beforehand. The now agreement was the same as tho old, with, the addition of a bonus clause similar to that adopted in, tho Petono and Ngahauranga cases.
