A strange coincidence happened at the Canterbury Jockey Club's metropolitan meeting on Monday. In the New Zealand Derby . Stakes for three-year-olds, one mile and a half, the three placed horses—The Toff, Egypt, and Good Hope —met in the Pioneer Handicap for two-year-olds,' five furlongs, exactly twelve months ago on the. same course at the same meeting. On that occasion The Toff, carrying 7st. Gib., won by two lengths and a half, Egypt, Bst. 91b., beating Good Hope, 7st. 71b., by a neck. On Monday The Toff, carrying Bst. 101b., beat his rival—Egypt, Bst. 101b. —by half a •length, Good Hope, Bst. 101b. ( being four lengths away third. The Pioneer Handicap was run in Imin: 1 l-ssec., while tho Derby was cut out in 2min. 34 2-ssec.
