WaiinaChaki was a good, favourite, but he fell (at tho first fenoe and broke his leg. Bill {Terry, failed to carry hi 3 big -weight, and {Cast Iron wras ridden right out to beat jCritio.- 'The''top-weight was a poor third, and Clemonoy was tailed off. I Bimeter and Cherry Blossom wore with(arami from the Criterion Handicap. pPanmnie was a hot order, and had every jchanoe to win, but the unroliahlo Oxenjhope, who was ridden by Deeley to-day, Vcreated record figures for the distance, [and won by a oouplo of lengths. Panprare was a length in front of TaringaIwatu, who came very fast at tho finish. vChakwana was fourth, and then came (Hyginas and Flying Start, .-with. Heeltap land Sea Lord last.
Kilrea, coupled; with! Golden Pippin, .■was the choico of backers in tho Irwell IHandicap. The , Kilbrcney filly began Smartly, and led the whole way. Red Rock; a well-grown, Rokeby gelding, was second, o, head, in front of Elocution, while in a line with the last-earned was SHymeona, who is improving. I Egypt Tho Toff, and Wardancer were svonly backed! in tho Derby, which resulted in a fino finish between the two former. The first half mile took 53sec„ land the field was piloted by .Eockbound, 'with the othera-in a hunch, and Egypt and The Toff, the latter pulling hard, itook charge coming on to the half-mile •peg ; A. great raoe between the mair ended in a bare length victory for the Boniform gejding-.. Good Hope was three lengths away, and then came Wardancer, fceaten off. Eookbound tired to nothing. STha winner got o great reception. He ,Ws ridden by L. H. Hewitt, whose first iVin it was since returning to tho Dominion.
There was a good field of 10 runners in [the Juvenile Plate. The Greenwood bracket,. Biplane and Eibble, was the elect with backers, but Estland, Koesian, land Disdainful, had plenty of support. jßiplano jumped out clear, and never let ithe others near him. Koesian was rimming second till the last few strides, when 'jEstland headed him. Hyttus andKilwne were together, fourth. \ The Metropolitan Handicap was one of i'the best races ever seen on tho Riccarjton course, and resulted in a sensational ■finish, between a rank outsider in Marco SBello, Mullingar, and John. Barleycorn. /The winner won by the narrowest of mar'gins, and camo_ from a long way back, the favourite was : unlucky twice in {tha'race. John Barleycorn rau a Bterlluig raoe, hut the luok was against him fat the finish. The winner is owned- by Mr. T. H. Lowry. This was the Hawke's ; !Bay sportsman s first success at the meeting.
