LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

A PLUCKY ACT Sir, —This afternoon a. very plucky act was performed by a military handsman in stopping a horso which Lad been frightened by th© noise in town. His act probably averted a serious accident, but whether or not was very praiseworthy in itself. The act involved, however, tho bandsman leaving his position, and for his he was apparently severely reprimanded ■by tho officer in chargc. It was seemingly more necessary to keep in tho ranks than to prevent an accident. Tho actions of both men stood out boldly. Hurrah, for tho man who stopped tho horse! —I am, etc., OBSERVER, AVcllington, November 3. RECRUITING Sir,—l read Mr. Von Haast's letter in your, issuo of this morning with much interest. I think that themem--bers of Parliament for tho Wellington Province should insist that carefullyprepared statistics be pubished giving the number of recruits who have enlisted (from the beginning up to date) in the various centres (and from the various provincial districts). For a considerable tirao Wellington was far ahead of the other centres in tho matter of recruiting; but,. for some time back, no figures have heen published showing the percentage of recruits (relativo to population) enlisting. Now, it is only fair, in view of the adoption of conscription—tho only equitable method of dealing with t\"> issue—that the centres that aro behind in tho relative! contribution of recruits should bo made to make good their deficit in recruits before the other centres are called upon for further quotas (under consc-rintion). —I am, etc., | FAIR PLAY. | November 1, 1916.
