ONSLOW BOROUGH
AMALGAMATION WITH THE CITY INQUIRY AS TO TERMS As mentioned in yesterday's Dominion, tho matter of an amalgamation between the City and Oiiblow Borougn is being mado the subject of an inquiry on tho part of the lattor body. To discover on what terms the City would bo likely to consider, the amalgamation proposal, the Onslow Borough Council, through -its clerk (Mr. H. Abraham) has forwarded the following letter to the Town Clerk (Mr. Jno. R. Palmer), under date Soptemher 29:— "A committee of this council, which has been set up to inquire into tho quostion of amalgamation with the City has instructed me to_ say that it would he glad if the council can see its way to have it supplied with answers to the following questions:— (1) Would Onslow ho liable for tho cost of electric light installation now, or as at the date of amalgamation, in uso in the borough?
(2) Undor what conditions (assuming the Government embargo under tho Hutt Railway'and Road Improvement Act, 1905, were removed, would trams bo extended to Kaiwarra?
(3) What would be the, position as far as may bo ascertained, with regard to rates pending special improvements such as water and drainage? (4) (a) What were tho terms upon which Melrose, Wadestown, and Northland. joined the City? (b) What total of rates has heen collected from those districts since their absorption,, and what total moneys have been expended in,them? (c) What were the number and values of building permits issued for each district since their amalgamation ?
(5) Would special rateable areas, be defined in connection with the extension of progressiva works. (6) Upon what conditions did Melrose, Wadestown, and Northland obtain water and drainage ? "Should it bo desired my committee will be pleased to attend any conference appointed." Tho above letter, and its very pertinent questions, was not submitted to open council on Thursday evening, but has been referred to the Finance Committee for consideration and an answer.
