MONEY FOR SOLDIERS

HOW IT IS REMITTED. Relatives and friends of members of tho New Zealand Expeditionary forces arc allowed to remit money to soldiers through tlio Defence Department. Tho money is forwarded to the Paymaster's Branch .in the United Kingdom or at the front, and is delivered to the men as quickly as possible. This system was introduced in the early stages of tne war, when complaint was mado that parents and others found it difficult to get money to "the boys." But the position has changed materially since that time. Tho banks have made arrangements to remit money to soldiers free of exchange, and a similar service is offered by Keutcr's Agency and Cook's Agency. There is also a money-order cablegram service between New Zealand and tho United Kingdom. The Defence authorities are continuing to remit money when they are asked to do so, but they advise now that remittances should bo mado through other than official channels. Tho officers of the Paymasters' Branch have found tho handling of remittances a very serious addition to their work, and there is no strong reason at the present timo whv they should bo asked to undertake ..0.,, task, that lies outside their official du ties. • ■ '
