THE CALL FOR MEN.

ADDITIONAL RECRUITS ENTER CAMP

BIG SHORTAGE REMAINS

.About ono huudrod rocruits entered camp yesterday from tho various military districts, this number representing tJio full response to tho call for volunteers to covor the phortage of over 850 men in the Twenty-sccond Reinforcements. The shortago noiv stands at about 750, and the districts lire being asked to send forward tho ruqitired recruits with the Twenty-third Reinforcements during the week 'after next. Any deficiency remaining then will make necessary the raising of a eosncript draft by means of ballot, unless tho operation of clause 35 provides sufficient men. The Defence Department's recruiting campaign is proceeding, but the results in tho form of recruits for immediate service have not been large. Tho non-commission-ed officers who are at work in Wellington are making the first systematic canvass of tlio city and suburban areas, tho citizens' recruiting committees having failed to perioral this task, and au important part of their effort is the collection of the names ot men. who appear to be liable for service nnder 'clause 35 of the Act, which concerns tfle "shirking families.". Tho lists compiled under this heading had contained very few names from Group 5 (Wellington City and Suburbs), and it appears ttiat some families affected by the clause had escaped notice.

Tho following thirteen men were sent into camp yesterday from Group s:— W. A. Crow, li'. Armitage, J. E. Armstrong, I'. G. Chapman, W. J. Harvey, H. Holland, R. W. Hood, J. M'Namec, G. 15. J. Nicholls, 1?. Shannon, N. R. Wilson, H. T. Doig, and J. Van Staveren. The group has now practically cleared away its shortage, but it requires many additional recruits for the 'l'wenty-tliird Reinforcements. Tho quotas for that draft are assessed on the number of reservists of tho First Division remaining in the district, and "Wellington's quota, on this basis, will be larger than it was in previous months.
