Dance for Nineteenth Reinforcements. A dance in honour of members of the- Nineteenth Reinforcements will be given at the Soldiers' Club,. Sydney Street, on Saturday evening. All ladies holding red tickcts 'arc asked to attend at 7 p.m. sharp, and present their tickets at the door. Those who are unable to be present are asked to notify the dauce committee. Christmas Gifts for Samoan Troops. Tho busy bees that frequont the City Council Chamber whenever there is work to do for the soldiers were present in full force yesterday, lending new life and colour to tho somewhat frigid dignity of the Chamber, from ivhioh emanates those civic decrees that all must bow to. Tho present cause of activity is the preparing of the Christmas gift parcels for our soldiers at Samoa. The Christmas cheer for tliose in Samoa will consist of a bundle of goods for each man, containing —One towel, one shirt or two singlets, one tin of raspberry jam, one tin condensed milk, 0110 plum pudding, cigarettes and tobacco, bottle of ; sweets, one handkerchief, and one pair of laces— as good an assortment of comforts.and luxuries as could vory well be devised when tho climate of the Islands is taken into consideration, Whilst ons group of ladies were so engaged in tho Chamber, another was engaged in tho corridor in enveloping vermin-proof shirts for our. men in France. These are shirts of buttercloth, soft and pliable, which have been immersed in a solution of creosote, methylated spirits, and turpentine— said to bo an effective discourager of tho pest which adds so much misery to the lot of our men in the trenches. St. Anno's Sale of Wcrli. The sale of work at St. Anne's Schoolroom, Northland, was opened yesterday afternoon by Miss Fraser. There was a large gathering of parishioners and friends present. Tho vicar (the Rev. Cyril Harvey), in introducing Miss Eraser, spoke of tho objects of the sale,' namely, to raiso £100 for the two big debts of the parish, and he appealed to all for a spirit of gen-, erosity. Miss Frascr then declared the sale open and business commenced. Those in charge of the various stalls were as follow:—Guild stall (plain work): Mrs. Stubbs and Miss Piatt. Produce: Mrs. Brown and Mrs. M'Lood. Refreshments: Mrs. Boyes. Fancy: Mrs. 11. Piatt and Miss Joiics. Sweets: The Misses Berry. Flowers: Mrs. Hood and Mrs. Douglas. Fairy Well; Mrs. Smith and Miss Willsoii. Children' s_ Stall: Members of tho Children's Guild. Kitchen: The Vicar and G.E.JI.S.i There were numerous musical items and recitations during the afternoon and evening. Tho sale will bo continued to-day.
Mr. Gerald Brandon, youngest son of the late Sir. Eustace do Bathe Brandon, was married to' Miss Gertrude Sl'Beth; youngest (laughter of Sir. James M'Beth, of "Forgon," Slarton, on October 23, by the itev. J. Hunt, at the bride's home, Only relatives'were present. The bridegroom loaves in tho next Reinforcements.
Owing to the fact that the week-end. is being dpvolcd to the big, Red Cross effort, the Y.M.I!.A. Triangle Depot will not be opened this week-end. Noxt week-end it will ho opeii as usual, aud tho ladies in charge will he glad of any contributions for (Soldiers' Comforts Fund. Tlio committco responsible for the Catholic Knitting Guild's stall at Boul-cot-fc Stroct on Friday, Red Cross Day, met in St. Patrick's- Hall yesterday afternoon to make linal arrangements. There was a full attendance, all very full of enthusiasm and onorgy, ready to do their utmost to add their quota to the fund which is doing so much for tho relief of the sick and wounded. A vote of tlianks was passed to Slessrs. Sc'oullar and Co., who aro genorously erecting and decorating tho guild's stall free of cost. A large numbor of articles are promised (many, in fact, being already rccoived), including a plentiful supply of fresh eggs from the country, lamb, fowls,, home-made cakes, innumerable ico creams, sweets, etc..
.It is anticipated that about £1000 will lie raised hy tlio Red Cross appeal in Slasterton and district.
St. Pater's Church Bazaar. Fine weather favoured the opening of St. l'etor's bazaar. Mrs. Coleridge, who opened the proceedings, was received by the Vicar, the Rev. H. Watt son. Tlio stall fnihts were composed of white lattice-work covered with-wis-taria? and other picturesque flowers and foliage. ■ Those were designed by Mrs. Krceft and.Mrs,. Cart-er. .-' ... The following ladies managed the various stalls: —Guild stall: Mesdamcs Wilborfoss,' Simpson, Nicholls,' and Johnson. Soldiers' Stall': Mrs. Richards and Miss Wood. Flowers: Mrs. Brown and helpers. Producer Mesl dames Kroeft and D. Anderson. Girls: The Misses Mills, Roes, and Dawson. The refreshments were in charge of Mesdamcs Muir and Jeffries, and their assistants, and. the tables were bright with red anemones and whito broom. During tho evening a pleasant little programme was given, consisting- pf some excellent violin music li.y-'Alr. S. arid Miss L. Anderson ; a song, "Douglas Gordon," by Miss'Eileen Driscoll, which was encored, and Miss Gladys Watkins contributed nnnther little song, '.'The Little Damosel," which was much enjoyed. The Misses Nicholls (2) and Lyons repeated their amusing plav, "Between the Soup and the Savoury." A dainty Dutch ballet was danced' b;v Miss Beero's clever pupils,' the Misses Mavis Stringer, Zclda Bailley, Ng.iire Lemnioiij Nellio Murray, Lill'a, Bennct. Kathleen O'Brien, Rita M'Gee, and Mariorie Wiggs. 'Flic bazaar will remain open this afternoon and evening. Patriotic Cake Room. Mr. E. S. Baldwin's party of Readers. are giving a reading- of two plays, "The Mollusc," by H. H. Davies, and "Waterloo," by Oonan Doyle, in tlio Concert Chamber of tho Town Hall on Friday, November 10. All the proceeds will go. to aid the funds of the Kelbum Troop of the Dominion Boy Scouts.
The Ekotahuna l'ublie _ Hall was crowded last Friday evening for the concert in aid of the Special Red Crosß Fund. An excellent and varied pro-' gramme was. given, overy itom boing cnoorcd. Miss Ruby Oliver, of Slasterton, was the leading soloist, and so fine a pieco of work as her performance of the "Mountain Lovers" has rarely been h?ard in Eketa'buna. Tho singing of Mr. Stewart, of Tirauiv.ea, was greatly appreciated. Tho accompanists were Mrs. Moore, Misses Kummcr and.Lowes, and-Mr. ,0. C. Holmes. Tlio lvas as'. follows:—Grecian Scenc: Soloists, Mrs. Carter, Misses Oliver, 1-laswell, and Hare. . String quartet: Mrs. Burt (banjo), Sirs. Markland (violin), Sir. Carter (violin), Sirs. Carter (piano). Tho Japanese' tea scene and choruses were very bright and jolly. The soloists were Sliss Haswcll (Tea),' Sliss Sl'Lelland (Cinnamon Tieo), Sirs. SlarkslanVl (Sloo Tree), Sir. Wells (Pearl of Sweat Japan). ; . The following ' gave vocal i.toms: —Sliss Helen Anderson (Wellington), Sliss Bcresford (Alfredton), Miss Kummcr (Slasterton), Sliss Bennett (Wellington), and Messrs. Wells and Stewart. A comic duet in character was clovorly given by Slisses Knmmer and Bennett, and Sliss Kummcr n.lso danced "and sang ("Keep Off tho Grass"), from tho "Toreador." The performance concluded with :( comedietta ("Popping tho Question"). Tho Slisses Anderson (2), Kerr, and Slansford dressed and acted with good taste and marked utility, and were ably supported by Messrs. - .Thomson . and Slarkland. ' The clever stage arrangement of tlio various settings refleeted great credit.on the chief organise!', Miss Anderson, who devoted much time to the production of tlio entertainment, which was successful from overy point of view. The lied Cross will'benefit to the amount of about £27.
