After leaving Wellington, the lit-tlo vessel encouutered tho lull forec of a south-east gale, until within about 100 miles of Sydiiey. During tho galo a tremendous sea struck the port side, smashing it to pieces. Up till that limu a full head of steam had to be maintained, ajid only five tons of coal remained to carry her to port. Signals of distress were flying from the masthead, but were not noticed. At 11 p.m. on Sunday a. steamer was seen making for Sydney, but although threo blue lights woro burned and two rockets fired the call for help was not apparently seen by the steamer, which kept on her course, ijailu had been, hoisted, 'and slrt> ran before tho wind, and with tlio aid of what little woodwork was left tho KopuUti managod to reach Botany Bay, wliero enough coal was secured to take the vessel to Sydney.
