FIERCE BATTLES IN THE PASSES ATTACK ON MONASTIR ALLIES RESUME THE OFFENSIVE LATEST HIGH SEA CRIME The Rumanians, desperately defending their country against- the Bulgar-Turkish-German invaders, have now been strengthened by the arrival of Russian reinforcements. Fierce fighting is proceeding in tho Carpathian passes. The Allies in< the Balkans, after a postponement duo to the weather, have launched a fresh attack on Monastir and captured the "side door" to that" city. Oil the Western front tho British line, comparatively speaking, is quiet. Tho French are making progress in the vicinity of Saillisel. The Germans on the La Maisonette front claim to have stormed tho French positions. The French report says that tlie enemy merely penetrated a portion of the line north of La Maisonette. There are no material developments from the other theatres. Field Marshal von Hindenburg has given an> interviow to a Vienna correspondent, in which he gives expression to some extraordinary statements. The British liner Marina, with a number of Americans on hoard, was sunk by shell-fire by a German submarine.
