SALVATION ARMY'S APPEAL A FINE RESPONSE "Your splendid response to tho self-denial appeal commands my highest appreciation and raises a glorious standard for your comrades in all lauds. The above is the acknowledgment cabled by General Booth in response to tho intimation that the Dominion selfdenial collection had realised a total of £30,550 10s., as against £22 392 <>s Id last year. 11l connection with tlio declaration of tho results of the self-denial appeal, the Army conducted an extraordinary thanksgiving meeting in s tho Vivian Street Citadel last evening'. Commissioner Hodder presided, being supported by tho chiet secretary (LieutcnantColoiiel M'lnnes). The platform was occupied by quaintly-garbed representatives of the nations, with ,an effective background representing a temple edifice, choicely decorated; with theflags of the countries where tho Salvation Army is at work, and containing the names of those,many countries on tho front. An interesting programmewas rendered, but tho chief interest centred in .the announcement of tho various amounts' raised iu the different centres throughout the Dominion. The phenomenal results achieved in the Manawatu, Taranaki, Wairarana, and Hawke's Bay districts surprised all, and called for most enthusiastic applause, ... Tho total raised in Australia this rear was £38,000 for self-denial and 19000 for purely military purposes.
