WELLINGTON'S "ZOO."

a' YEAR OF PROGRESS. A policy of progress has been adopted by tho Wellington Zoological Society during the past, year. At every available oportuuity additions to the Zoo havo been made, and the report to be prosontod at tho annual meeting this evening shows a most creditable year's work.

During the year an emu and an ostrich were killed, and these were replaced with eight ostriches from the Ptikokoho ostrich farm. Another successful move was started by the death of the big camel that for years was a feature of the Zoo. The society offered to contribute £10 towards the purchase of a young camel and the City Council accepted? tho offer, and twocamols were bought at Perth, W.A., and brought to Wellington. As the expenses of the transport of the camels wero heavy, on account' of the war, the society took an extra collection in Newtown Park and contributed £20 instead of £10 to their cost. The society also contributed to the avian side of the Zoo. They were fortunate in obtaining a pair of Sevastopol geese, the gander of whicli was almost pure, white. Two collections of interesting small birds also were purchased. The buying of a five-horned sheep from India- was agreed upon, providing the City Council bought another. Tho counoil agreed to buy an eight-horned sheep..These sheep cost £5 and £8 respectively. The fiyeliomed sheep is expected to arrive shortly, but difficulty is expected in the purchase of the other animal, as they are hard to obtain. Two females and a second malo Angora goat have been purcbased, and thero are iiow four of these animals in the Zoo. A horse was received from Mr. M'Gregor, of Riddiford Street, and a ring-neckod dove from Mrs. Brown,, of 98 Constable Street, a white parrot by Mis* E. Caldiciitt, all of which wero duly forwarded. One of the most interesting gifts received was "Osman," a dog which led the dog-teams in tho late Captain Scott's Antarctic Expedition. The statement of accounts shows a credit balanco of £16 6s. 6d.
