A monthly service- of steamers from Now York to Now Zealand and Australia is in future to be run by the Luckcnbach [lino, two of whoso vessels recently called at Wellington and Auckland. A representative of tho oompany. Mr. H. H, Bbey, has nst returned from a three months' visit to Australia. Previous to that he visitod Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin. with tho object of establishing agencies, arranging services, and malting general inquiries ns 1o the prospects for return cargoes to America for tho steamers belonging to the Jjuckenbaoh liine. The arrangement that has been made, however, is for tho homewardbound stcamens to Kow York to call at Newcastle, niter discharging all cargo for Australasian ports, there to pick up a cargo of coal for Qhili. At the latter place freights of nitrates are .to bo so-
cured, and tho steamers will then complete their homo run either to New York or .Baltimore.
Considerable interest has been taken in tho Luckenbnch Lino in New Zealand on account of tho allegations made respecting tho nationality of tho owners of the lino. Mr. Ebcy stated to a "Now Zealand Herald" representative on Friday that the company "nod been established for over forty years. The line, he said, was controlled by native-born Americans, and was financed by American capital.

lIACE AOEOSS THE PACIFIC. The first stage of a most interesting race across tho Pacific OceaJi from San Frondsco to New Zealand between tho American barque Golden Gate and the Wellington-owned barque Louisa .Craig was uomploted on 'Saturday "morning;, when tho Golden Gate arrived at Auckland after a good run of 49 days. The American vessel left San Francisco 10 days before the New Zealander, which is bound for Lyttelton. The arrival of tho Louisa Oraig is being keenly awaited. The Golden Gate has on board a cargo of case oil, part of which will bo discharged at the northern port beforo departure is taken for Wellingtou with the remainder. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP^ O.aptojH 'Morris, late of tho Goulbourno, is now In charge of the Wostralia in place of Captain Easson, who has taken command of the Victoria. Captain Crolt, of tho latter vessel, has gone aahoro on six months' sick lcavo. Mr. Earl has roceiv'ed orders to rejoin tho Koroiniko as chief officer. Mr. Appleton, acting chief, has come up to Wellington for orders. Messrs. Gousky, Owen, and Stephens, officers of the Mararoa, havo transferred to the Maori, and Messrs. Batt and Gibeon, of the Maori, have joined tho Mararoa. Mr. Richardson, purser of the Maori, has received instructions to join' the Ma> pourika, and Mr. Pilchcr has rejoined the Maori as purser. Mr. H. Short has joined the latter vessel ao assistant purser. Mr. G. Watt has joined tho Koroiniko as third engineer, and Mr. Young has gone to Auckland for orders. As the A. aW A. Lino's chartered steamer Hurunui is not leaving- Sydney for Auckland till October 31 she is not to arr.ivo at Wellington till tho end of next week at earliest. Bannatyne. and Co. expect to dispatch the Defender for Hokitika toworde the end of next week., r> A load of wool packs will bo taken to Napier from Wellington by tho Hippie today. She will return, here on Thursday to load for Napier and Gisborne. • It is not expected that the Kaitoa will bo ready to resume running in conuno tion with the Nikau till tho beginning of nest week. \ Timaru cargo will be received by tho Rosamond up till noon, to-day. Tho coastal steamer Orepuki should, arrive here from Timaru to-morrow. Sho will be dispatched for Nelson and Nydia Bay on Wednesday. Tho Union Company's Kowhoi has been fixed to load at Grcymouth next week for Miramar.
Southern cargo will be brought uo to Wellington by the Poherua towards the end of the week, after which the vessel will go on to Wostport 'and Greymouth.
Before proceeding on to Aortharn ports to-day at 5 p.m. tho Monowai will put out 226 tons of .Dunedin and Lyttelton cargo at Jorvoia Quay. For some considerable timo past the Mararoa has beon most consistent'in her running between Wellington andx.Lyttelton, and she has tfeen establishing good times. On Friday the vessel cleared Lyttelton Wharf at 8.10 p.m., and sho was tied up hero exactly 12 hours later. Captain 0. M'Loan is now in charge of tho Ifuxaroa.
According to advices' received in Wellington on' Saturday, tho American, schooner Esther Buhne, w'hich, cleared San Francisco on September 1 for Napier, has on board 7700 cases of gasoline. 96,595 feet of timber, and six spars.
Latest American mail advices state that a barque named the' Narwhal, 389 tons, has been chartered to load merchandise at Sob. Francisco for New Zealand porta, , i The Union Company's Wailtora- is due a*, the Bluff about Thursday next from Calcutta, Singapore, and. Bunbury. She will .afterwards visit Dunedin, Lyttcltoni Wellington,, and. Auckland to complete discharge. Thi» New Zealand Hospital Ship Marama Is at present being overhauled, cleaned, and painted at Port Chalmers. On the tcleErajph notice board at the | General Post Office It w> announced that tho Komato. sailed from. Westport for Wellington at 1.20 p.m. on Saturday. Consequently, when the vessel did not show up here durintr yesterday afternoon it was thought that she hod mot with bad weather. On arrival in port last evening it was ascertained that tile Komata left the Wost Coast port at 10.20 _p.m. on Saturday, and experienced E<K)d""weather on the run up, cutting out the distance in under 22 hourn.
The Oanopus, whioli arrtvod at Wellington from Westport last evonlns, has not visited this port regularly lor some time. Oaptoin G. Lobb, Marine Superintendent for tho Westport CoaJ Company, is in charge of hor, and It is understood that Oaptadu Yenn wll again take command to-morrow. '
