ABOUT A TAXI STAND
OPPOSITE VIEWS.
Which side of Cuba Street should the Dixon Street taxi stand bo on? That is the question that is agitaflng the minds of- quite a number of peoplo in that vicinity at the present time: The stand used to bo on the eastern side, but owing to complaints made by "the proprietor of the Royal Oak Hotel it was moved to the other side, and the taxi-drivers were ordered not to com u' nearer the building alignment of ; Gu'ba Street West than-12 feet. But Dixon Street West- is becoming a very busy thoroughfare, and those interested in the big new warehouses, shops, and factories recently urged the City Council, to move the stand back to Dixon. Street East, where the traffic is light by comparison.
Yesterday afternoon a deputation of four of the taxi-drivers concerned waited on tho By-Laws-and Traffic Committee of the council to protest against being once more shifted. On their behalf Mr. Hibberd urged that they were better suited where they were,, chiefly because they could move up to the head of -the stand without using any power, owing to the grade of the roadway, and offered, if necessary, that the first car should be 44ft. hack from Cuba Street instead of 12 feet as at present. The deputation, was told : that the protest would receive due consideration.
As against this the Town Clerk hasreceived a letter signed by James Smith and Co., To Aro House Co.. Wellington Bread.Co., S&arland and Co., Thomas Ballinger and Co., F. Cooper, Ltd., and' others, to tho following effect.:— "Dear sir,—-In furtherance of the re--cent deputation which awaited on the By-Laws Committee last week, relative to removing the present taxi-stand inDixon Street, on the western' side of Cuba Street, to where it was "originally ;On the eastern, side, wo, theundersigned, beg to support thorcquest made by •James Smith, Ltd., and .To Aro House Drapery Co., Ltd., for its. removal. We desire to emphasise the fact'that; on account of the very heavy traffic which passes up the western side-of Dixon Street, ..the present taxi stand -renders it difficult to negotiate, and is a continual menace to traffic, and has already led: to more than one accident. For thisi and tlio other reasons already, planed before--the committee, we trust you.-will, favourably consider our request."
