POULTRY NOTES
(Br OHumcciEß.) Need for United Action. The executive of the New Zealand Poultry' Association will meet at the Hotel Cecil, on Monday next, to discuss the Best means of .prosecuting the campaign against Asiatic, eggs and other business demanding' the attention p! the .executive. . Mr. S. H. Scott will be. present from Auckland, and one or two of tho southern members will attend. The preparation of a.programme for next conference will also engage' the executive's attention. An Enthusiastic Circle. The Oam'aru Egg Circle undertook to raise .£IOO for the Red Cross Eund, and in less than one month raised .£120.. The organisation was so complete that the effortVwas crowned'with success.; The secretary, Mrs. W. E. Davey, was largely responsible for this splendid effort. According to tho Chnstchurch "Press" of Monday last, Mr'. J. Merrett has raised- ,£221. at his market for tho war funds. • Their splendid efforts shine up against tho apathy and want of enthusiasm shown by many other poultry organisations throughout the Uqminion, many of.whom could be-doing a great deal-more than they are doing for the war funds. The Imported Eggs. ' , Mr.' S: Thomson, an enthusiastic pastrycook at Christchurch, is doing. splendid . service in fighting the" Asiatic eggs. - He claims they have come hern absolutely under German-control, and ho says he cannot support his brother fighting at the front in any better way than by protesting against the commercial encroachments of tho enemy. From the "Oamaru Mail" we take ; the following from Mr. Thomson's address:— • "The difficulty .of the situation, Mr. Thcnison said, was when ono Government Department sought to Build up the industry and another ' countenanced tho importation of Asiatic eggs, which was declared to bo contrary to the regulations of the Pure Foods Act, and which, if allowed to. continue, 1 threat ened to undermine the whole poultry, industry of the Dominion. The landed value of the- imported, eggs .was about 7d.. per dozen, and agents claimed lOd. as the market value for them, while an analysis of the product had determined the food value of the eggs.as equal to Is.. 2d. per dozen. The position, would be that unless some relief were afforded and tlie provisions of the Pure ]?6odß Act made to operate, the egg-producers would be reduced ,iV ' competing with Chinese labour, under which handicap they could not hope to • survive. Mr.. Thomson said poultry-farming - was ons of the two industries prominently mentioned as suitable for returned and incapacitated soldiers to take up, and asked if it was a fair or patriotic proposition to place them on poultry-farms to compete against, the.Chinese product, which was in reality a'German-controlled industry, and make them- fight again in industry the nation -they had been fighting in. war. "At prescut, the lecturer said, the government ■ was spending about JJSOOO per annum in-'trying to foster the industry, and during the last six_months the importation of Asiatic egg 3 uad cost the Dominion, nearly, J!10,000; and was at, the same. timo strangling the indusry. In conclusion,'Mr.'Thomson referredto tho faot that the future of the industry depended upon prompt and united action being taken, and that unless lhe s importation, was stopped, egg-producing in. New Zealand would bo impossible, arid m that case the importation would be in ilio hands of indent merchants in tho Dominion, aud the price would be beyond control in New Zealand altogether. Mr. Thomson indicated certain lines along which action might be taken to combat the menace."
Increased Production. Unless, something is dejie • to protect and encourage'poultry..production, eggs and table poultry-will soon be a luxury-' Table poultry cannot, be supplied to-meet: the"demand at any price with' tho encroachment of imported eegs ..frightens overyoiie out of the poultry business. However, it's an ill wind that blo.ws no one some good, and those' who' kepp to poultry production .will ;Teap the .high prices. that are bound to jjo'rae. V •.'.,. : N.Z.
