MUNICIPAL FISH MARKET

A BRIGHTER OUTLOOK. Tho interest which has been to fioms extent focussed on tho Municipal Fish Market has not been without effect. Tho market lias been placed under the control of an enthusiastic manager in Mr. Sargent, and a new method of purchasing supplies has been inaugurated with good results. Formerly there was a good deal oF selling on commission on behalf of tho fishermen ; now an arrangement has boon made to buy supplies of fresh fish outright, and at the same time tho attention of hotel and restaurant proprietors has been directed to tho market as a source of supply which may bo worth their while to favour with their demands. The market is now prepared to buy all the fish that can bo .sup. plied. On Thursday last 30 cases of fish were disposed of, and a like quantity was got through yesterday. If by any chance there is a surplus, tho smoke-room is called into requisition, and a supply of smoked fish is available the next day. Tho council's enterprise in arranging with the Government for tho 6alo of trout caught at Lake Taupo will probably come into operation next week. The council has decided to sell fresh trout at 6d. per lb., and smoked at Sd. per lb., and are being paid 15 per cent, for their trouble. At 'present the council has under consideration tho establishment of a shop in one of tho main thoroughfares, in -which case the market will be used as a receiving depot and cool store, from which the retail, premises, will be supplied as Tecfuired. Thoro are those who believe that, worked on j business lines, tho market will yet I justify its existence.
