THE INFORMATION DEPARTMENT
The following progress report of the work of the Discharged Soldiers' Information Department as at October 2-1 is made available- by theMMiniste r in Charge (the Hon. A. L. Herdman): — Total .number of men on register—(a) Disposed of 4822, (b) under action 544, (c) not ready, for action (including men returned by , recent transports) 373; total. 5739. .
Particulars showing how cases dealt with:—(A) Cases disposed of: (a) Men who liavo work to return to, and men who have re-enlisted or returned to military duty, etc., 2029; (b) men placed ,in employment, 1137; (c) meii who havo signed "assistance aiot required," 1109; (d) .left New Zealand or cannot ascertain address, 145; (e) men who havo not responded to repeated communications, and men who liave" accepted work the Department found for', them- but failed ' to start work, 402 j', total,? 4822.'
(B) Cases Tinder action: (a) Reports upon cases not yet returned by officers making inquiries, 104 1 ;, (b) awaiting further advice (including men who liaro stated that they are not yet ready for work), 265; (c) at present, on employment wanted register, 175: total, 544.
(C) Cases not ready for action:, Men convalescing, not ready for employment, "and not yet discharged by the military authorities, 373. Grand total, 5739.
