FRENCH CLUB
Tho French Club held its weekly meeting on Wodneisday night, when a varied and interesting programmo was gone through. The attendance was good. Miss Mead read from a French periodical a letter addressed to a soldier, who had lost his sjght in action. This pointed out that, in spite of his affliction, he might still lead a happy, useful, life, as there we're facilities for j the afflicted to learn suitable trades, | thereby enabling them with their pensions to earn a competency. Mr. Hodson gave a humorous piece, "Le Canard," and Mr. Whitton gavo_ a fine rendering of a poem by Lamartine, entitled "Lo Lac." Miss R. Van Stavcren contributed a short paper, describing her experiences in Visiting Holland,! the voyage from England, the landing, the train journey to Rotterdam, and the'meeting with friends there. She said they afterwards, visited Dordrecht, and were much intrested in" the quaint houses, the church, cne of the most ancient in Europe, and the art treasures in tho museum./ Captain Barclay, who presided, gave a short address, and, referring to Miss Van Staveren's paper, spoke of the influence and beauty of so much Continental statuary and'pictures. He referred then to' the Germans in Belgium, so close to Dordrecht, speaking of how' they destroyed works of art ruthlesslv, besides being guilty of brutal murders and other atrocities. At tho olosc the secretary gave a short report on the club's recent examination.of young students. of French. He showed how the interest excited by this branch of tho clubs' work had resulted in the number of candidates gradually increasing year by year, till this year forty-ous 1 had presented themselves. Votes- of thanks were passed.to the examiners, and special mention was made of the work of Madame Bendall in examining .very thoroughly the tomposition and dictation. It was resolved to give out medals and certificates to successful candidates on November 15. ;
Miss Ormond and her niece, Miss Ira Ormond have spent a. few .'days at the Uoyal Oak Hotel. '
