MONTHLY' MEETING

Tho monthly meeting of tho ellington Education Board was hold yesterday morning. There were present: The Hon. J. G. AY. Aitken (chairman), Messrs. J. Kebbcll, A. W. Hogg, J. Penney, A. Mackay, T. Moss, W. 11. Field, T. Forsyth, R. A. Wright, A\. Al'an, T. Rislnvorth, and G. London. Hutt District High School. A letter was received from the Department suggesting that the Hutt and retono District High Schools be amalgamated, pointing out that amalgamation would save expenditure in salaries. The Chief Inspector (Mr. T. R. Fleming) favoured.the proposal. Ho said there were only -twenty pupils at Hutt District High School. If it should not be necessary after amalgamation to appoint an extra teacher at Petone, a saving of £200 a year could be effected, and if it were necessary to have another teacher at Petone there would be a saving of from £50 to £60 a year. The board decided to act on the suggestion of the inspector, Mr. Rishivorth being the' only member to vote against the motion. Tho Hutt members insisted that the board should not joso sight of the question of tho' establishment at somo tuna in tho future of a secondary school in tho Hutt Valley. Mr. T. Rishwortli moved that the chairman and tho Chief Inspector, with the Ilutt members, go into t"ho question of obtaining a site for a district high school in the Hutt Valley, and report later to the board. —This-motion was carricd. Examination Fees. A letter was received from the Hutt District High School Committee, protesting against the requirement ol a fee for entrance to the Public Service examination. —The chairman expressed tlio opinion that tho Government was not at all, likely. to give way on tho point, and . that it .would therefore he . of little uso for. tho hoard to father the protest. The hoard, however, acceded to the wish of tho Hutt members that the protest should be sent on to the Department. j Plans of Sohool Buildings. j A letter was received from tho Department, asking tho board to forward approved- plans for types of school buildings. The chairman said that ' this was the letter that had roused the. ire of the Auckland and Dunedin Boards. .
