Owing to the very late arrival of the Maori in port last -evening, she could not run on the Welingtou-Lyttelton service last evening, and will now leave at 7.< to p.m. to-day. She will come straight back irom Lyttelton, arriving here in time to sail again on Friday evening for Lyttelton. She docs not take any Lyttelton cargo either to-night or to-morrow night, j The Pateena leaves Lyttelton to-night, and on arrival here to-morrow morning withdraws from the ferry: service, and the Maxaroa, which went aouth lost night, will remain in Lyttelton until to-morrow owning, and will then sail at her usual time, arriving hero on Saturday morning, and sailing again on Saturday night. VESSELS FROM AMERICA.-. Notable amongst the number of steam- 1 ers coming to New Zealand from overseas are tho largo number from American ports, chiefly New York and San Francisco. Since the middle of Atigust some twenty-five vessels have loft foreign ports for Wollington (not always direct-), and included in this number are fourteen—over half—from America. Nino of tho remainder come from London auu Liverpool. From now until about the second week in November, thero are 'twelve vessels expectcd here from overseas ports (not counting Australia), end of those eight are from America, two from London, ono from Liverpool, and one from Calcutta. Besides these vessels,, there are five others coming from, Amorican ports about, which no information has yet been published, but nothing is to hand about any vessels leaving English ports. HUItUNUI FROM NEW YORK. The A. and A. Lino advise that the Hurunui, which left New York on August 17 for Australian and New Zealand ports, will leave Sydney for Auckland on Friday. She should arrive in Auckland on Tuesday, October 31, and at Wellington near the end of tho week. v OPAWA F&OM LIVERPOOL. During the course of tho next few days tho Opawa, which left Liverpool on September 9, should fliTrivo in Melbourne. -She will afterwards eomo on to New Zealand ports.. i WAIMANA AT AUCKLAND. Tho head office of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company advise that the Waimana, which arrived in Auckland early' yesterday morning, will reach Wellington on Monday next. The Waimana left London on September 6, and arrived at Hobart on October 18. She left that port on October 18 in continuation of the voyage to New Zealand. ECHO'S. FOREMAST BROKEN. Shortly before 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon tho auxiliary echooncr Echo arrived in port and berthed at No. .1 Ferry Jetty. The schooner left Napier at 9.30 a.m. on Monday with cargo for Wellington. . The foremast head was'TSrokcn clean off. It appears that tho mast carried away when tho vessel was abreast Glonburn, a short distance from the heads, while she was proceeding under sail. She is a twin saw boat, however, and came in • with the aid of her engines. It will probably take about three days to fix the mast up, as it is not ascertainable whether tho material is available in Wellington, and. it may have to be got from Napier. She will in all probability sail for TUrakoho to load cement on completion of repairs. > WIRELESS FOR AMOKURA. At tho present time the Post and Telegraph Department has the matter of getting a suitable wireless set for Government training steamer Amokura, in hand, and it is expected that the set will come to hand shortly. The Amokura has just commenced a trip round the southern outlying islands, and after coming back to Wellington will leave on a trip round the Islands further to tho north, the two trips being done by the vessol annually. It is not very probable that the set, even if it arrives before she leaves on her next trip; will bo installed immediately, and the instalment will be carried out when the vessel lays up next winter. This will enable tho Amokura on her lengthy trips to have sowo communication with the world while cruising in these remote spots. Tho 6et will not be merely a. gatherer, but as in the case of tho Antartic steamer Aurora when she was slowly making her way to New Zealand with a broken rudder, will be a. means of letting the Amokura know if assistance is wanted, or letting others know if she herself requires assistance.
MESS TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. B. Wilton, launch engineer of the Marine Department, has received notico of his transfer to Pencarrow light, -where he will occupy the position of first assistant in place of Assistant-keeper Garland, who has resigned fr6m the service. ' Owing to the Maori corning back on the ferry service, t the following changes will take place amongst, the pursers:— Mr. A. B. Pilcher, at present attached to the local office of : tho Union Company, is to join the .Maori as purser, and Mr. H. Short, assistant purser on the Mararoa, will transfer to the Maori. Mr. 0. W. Richardson, acting-purser of tho Mararoa, will join the MapouriUa. Mr. It. K. Duckworth, purser on the Pateena, and Mr. E. Colebrook, assistant purser on the same vessel, will transfer to the Mararoa in similar capacities. Mr. P. Dennehy, of the local office of the Union Company, has returned iu duty. Mr. P. Mudie, eighth engineer of the Manuka, has come ashore. Captain B. Crowford, of the Atur., is on a holiday visit to New Zealand. The F. and S. Liner Somerset leaves Wellington to-morrow for Lyttelton, Timaru, Dunedin, and will then come back to Wellington, calling at Lyttelton en route. The Waimea sails for West Coast only on Saturday. / The Wootton sails for Nydia Bay on Friday, and returns hero on Monday. The vessel sails for Lyttelton the same day. Mir. E. G. P. Zohrab advises that the Breeze will arrive in Wellington from south on Monday next, and will sail for Wanganui the same day, returning to Wellington qbout the end of the week. Owing to not being able to finish work last night, tho departure of tho Ngahere for Wanganui, New Plymouth, and Greymouth was postponed until 6 a.m. to-day. Ilunning under charter to the Barber Line, of New York, tho steamer Century left New York on October 2 for Wellington, via Panama. She is due about November 9, and after finishing here goes to Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and Ade--laide. The C. and. D. Lino advise that the Port Lyttelton, at present in Melbourne, will probably leave that port to-morrow in continuation of her voyage, and her next ports of call in order will be Sydney, Auckland, Napier, and finally Wellington, where she is due on November 17.
