BRILLIANT COUP BY THE FRENCH

FORT DOUAUMONT RECAPTURED

MANY PRISONERS TAKEN

THE RUMANIAN CRISIS

ENEMY CAPTURES THE PREDEAL PASS

Like a lightning flash in the murky depression occasioned by the

erisis in Rumania, the French have struck suddenly, unexpectedly, and brilliantly at the German line in the Verdun sector. At one fell swoop the enemy's line for a length of about sis miles was smashed to a depth of something over two miles, and Fort Douaumont, the j village of Haudromont, and the deadly quarries were captured. Up to the present 3500 prisoners, with 100 officers, have been taken. The French losses were slight. The booty has not yet been catalogued. The new French line in this sector''touches grimly familiar names, which recall the terrible conflict which raged on that front in the early months of the year. The crisis in Rumania has developed to the extent that the Germans have captured the Predeal Pass, and certain

positions contingent to their operations near Constanza. The French

military critics agree that the loss of Constanza is "annoying," but not vital. From, the other great war theatres the news is either nil or extremely scrappy. The ."Providence Journal" tells an unedifying story of the notorious Captain Boy-ed's connection with the recent submarine piracies of the United States Atlantic 1 coast.
