LABOUR DAY ESSAYS
llio result o£ tho Labour Day essay [ competition for primary schools is announced as follows: —Joseph Delaney, Horner Street, 1; J. M'Lean, Kilbirnie, 2; William Scott, Adams Terrace, 3. Tho judged in lis remarks, states that not all tho competitors had a clear idoa of the subjcct, "Tie Origin and Meaning of Labour Day." Some failed to mention it except in tho title. Anions tho writers who lost for this failing were some who displayed considerable intelligence and' much originality in dealing with tho general Labour situation. Had they made clear
fclio connection between Labour Day. and tho matters of which they wrote they would have won prizes. A number of children had apparently received lessons in primary political economy. All were well aware of tho evift of long hours, but not all had as clear a conception of tho steps taken in Now Zealand to redress the workers' wrongs in this respcct. On the whole the comnosrKon in tho ossajs was good, and littlo fault could be found with the grammar.
