ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
Y FATAL DRAY ACCIDENT. Albert Henry .Tones, aged 25, whose parents resides in Christchurcb, was crushed to death yesterday morning under tragic circumstances. Jones, who had only been in Mnnt, C'ottrciJ and Co.'s employ for a short time, was driving a dray loaded with coal aloni; Waterloo Quay, near the Ferry Wharf, and was seated oil a hoard placed across the coal. The coal shifted somewhat suddenly, displacing the board, ■ and Jones was thrown off in front of the dray and the wheel apparently passed over his head. It is believed that death was instantaneous, as the loaded dra.y, it is calculated, weighed about three'tons. A bystander who witnessed the accident summoned assistance, but Jones was dead beforo the doctor reached the scene.
ELDERLY PORTER DROWNED. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dargaville, October 23. Last night, Jas.: Curnow, a porter at the Mangawhare Hotel, 72 years of age, was moving some casks of beer from the wharf to tho hotel, when he tripped over a pile, fell into tho river, ami was drowned. Tho body has not been rcco.vercd. RUN OVER BY A DRAY. (By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.) Masterton, October 24. . A shocking accident occurred here at 11 o'clock this morning. A lad named Geoffrey Wooding, aged 18, waa riding on a load of bricks in a dray driven by his father.' The bricks shifted, and the horse jumped forward, throwing ETie young fellow to tho ground. The wheel of the dray passed over his body, causing terrible injuries, from which tho lad died while being removed to the hospital. At the inquest to-night a verdict of accidental death was returned.
