New York, October 23. A sensation has boen caused by the publication of tlio minutes of a secret meeting of tho American Independence . Conference, an . organisation of prominent Anti-Britishers, Irish-Americans, and German-Americans, at which a report was received of an ( ultimatum presented to Mr. Hughes, demanding !that_ lie attack Great Britain in a public speech in exchange for support tit the _ election. Mr. Kugbes admits conferring with the organisation, but denies that he entered into any agreed ment, although tho Irish-Americans and the German-Americans consider that an agreement was made. The Republican managers are fearful that tho revelation will seriously jeopardise Mr. Hughes's chances in tho . election. \
