Mr. G. F. Gibb, of Kelbiim, received news yesterday! that his son, Mr. Douglas Gibb, who left with the Artillery in the Main Body to Gallipoli, has been wounded in France. Mr. Gibb has himßelf undergone a slight operation, and he will be confined to his home for a fortnight or so.
Private advice has been received by cable (says the Auckland "Herald") to the effect that Gunner It. Ivan Fleming, 3rd Field Artillery Battery, eldest son of Mr. J. H. and Mrs. Fleming, of Devonport, has been awarded- tho Distinguished Conduct Medal. Gunner Fleming was wooded in France in May, and, according to a letter received subsequently from a battery sergeant, he sustained his injuries while performing a very brava act. It is now presumed that this has been officially recognised. . Gunner Fleming left the Dominion with tho Main Body, and saw considerable service on Gallipoli. He was wounded, after arrival in France, in tho shoulder, hip, thjgh, and arm, but is now reported to be progressing favourably.
News has been received in Dunedin that Lieut.-Colonel Eugene O'Neill, D.5.0., who is serving with the Medical Corps in France, is "still fit and well after two years' campaigning."
The death has occurred in London of Mr. Allison Smith; formerly of the railway service in New Zealand and subsequently locomotive superintendent of Toe Viotorian railways.
Mr. J. Sinclair, Hataitai, has received advice from London that his son, Sergt. V. L. Sinclair, who was reported wounded in the recent fighting in France, is in the Walton-on-Thames Hospital with a Blight wound in. the foot.
Mr. R. C. Fowler, who has soM his farm at Mangamahoe after a residence there of twenty-five years, wa6 (says our Masterton correspondent) presented by his neighbours on Monday with an illuminated address.
Major E. H. Northcroft, solicitor, who is going to the front, -was entertained by members of the legal profession in the Waikato on Friday. Earlier in tie day tbe officers of No. 4 Group presented Mrs. Northcroft with & framed photograph of her husband.'
A further cablegram received by bis father reports that Lance-Corporal Douglas Yeats is in St. John's Hospital, Staples, seriously ill, with a gunshot wound in the shoulder.
At the meeting of the Rutt Borough Council, on t.ho motion of the_ Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin), it was decided to Bend a letter of condolenco lo the relatives of the lato Major Fleming Hobs, an ex-councillor, who was recently killed in action in France.
Residents of I'ctone in large numbers assembled at the Council Chambers last evening to bid good-bye to Police Sergeant Forster, who is to be transferred to Timaru after a residence in Petone of seven years. The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) referred to the Excellent, police record of Sergeant Forster and congratulated him on the able manner in which he had carried out bis official duties. On behalf of the citizens ho presented Sergeant Forster with a memento of his stay in Petone, and wished him every happiness in his new sphere. Sergeant Forster suitably acknowledged the kind wishes and thanked the gathering for tho handsome present .
