EASTBOURNE BOROUGH COUNCIL

Tho Eastbourne Borough Council met on Friday evening at Eastbourne. There wero present: Councillors Pilcher (in the chair), Levi, Preston, Cook, Russell, Foley, and Macphorson. s The Town Clerk (Mr. J. S. Day) reported that as the outcome of representations to the Chief Postmaster, an afternoon delivery! of mails was now being made in the borough over a certain area.

A lons letter was read from the Health Department urging the co-oper-ation of tho council in combating the fly pest, and was referred to the Bylaws • Committee to draw up a by-law relating to tho matter. Tlio Finance Committee report stated that tho total amount of rates colleced for the year ended September 30 was £1002, as against £667 for last year, and that since the date mentioned a further sum of £166 had boen collected. Tho cdmmitteo added it was satisfactory to know that ratepayers had responded so well with their rates, notwithstanding tho numerous calls that had been made on their resources recently through tjie war and the abnormal conditions prevailing at the prosent time.

A return was submitted showing that the cost of surveyjng and overhauling the ferry steamers was £1088. It was added that the returns from the ferry •traffic for tho six months ended September 30 showed an increase.of £340 on the corresponding period of last year, but against this the expenditure was £976 more, principally on account of the' increased cost of the overhaul of tho steamers this year. Various matters connected with tho ferry scrvice_ were discusspd. A petition was received asking for the 12.15 p.m. boat on Saturdays, to bo postponed until 12.20 p.m., but it was decided not to make any alteration _in the timetable/ at tho present tirnp. covering the issue of Reason tickets were adopted. ■ It was reported by the Ferry Board that good progress was being made by tho contractor with tho alterations to the Day's Bay wharf, and it was expected that they would be' completed before tho busy season.
