SUCCESSFUL OPENING
i WINS WELLINGTON
HANDICAP
CROWHURSI'S WEHESLEY STAKES
Tho postponed spring meeting of tbo . Wellington Racing Club was opened at ffrcntham yesterday in glorious weather, sand before a large attendance. Tile tearing was up to tho high, standard usually seen at the Trentham. course, jvisitors wore present from all parts, and Iho Ministry was represented hy the plons. W. H. Hemes;and A.' L. HordIwan. Proniinont sportsmen present included Messrs. E. W. Alison, G. L NStead, J. S. MTLeod; J. E. Hart, B. (Acton-Adams, B. J. Watt, G. D. Green--Iwood,, C. E. Mackay, H. B. Troutbeck, (iL. Harris, G. Hume, W. Hume, W. E lißidwill, H. E. Cooper, J. J. Corry, J. • K-foring Johnston, A. M'Donald, H. R. hooper, F. Armstrong, D. Buick, and •the Hon. J. B. Ormond. The totalisator /staff had a, very busy time, the total for [-the day being .£43,824 10s., as compared twith for the first day of the fenio meeting last year. The whole of the fifteen acceptors .went out for the Haok and Hunters' [Steeples, land 'a niost interesting contest fwas provided. After jumping away, 'ffiorekopu showed the way to Critic and preeza,' but "by the time tho next fenco (Was reached the bottom weight had lost ihis position. The bracketed pair then ■went out-in front, and fed down the *ack. from Strategist, Ruatangata, and Silver Monaroh. At tho stone wall The Wound ran off, and at tho water jump(Critio and Buatangata led a strung-out (field whilo Pond Memory got tangled up an the fenco and lost his rider. Rua!tangata*and Critic raced .nt the top fence. together, whore tho former, punch•ed S. Eeid off. Down tho back Critic fled Kauwairoa and Kiwitea, with the /others beaten off. Tho two raced at the |last fence together, and in a great finish iKiwitea won by a head from Critic, jKanwairoa was three lengths away, and ihen came Happy Jack, Silver Monarch, (Crystal Star, Sew, and Rerokohu. Another very close finish took place in the Eimntaka Handicap, in which Splendant got up in the last stride and- beat /Devotion by a nose, with Thoughtful a [bare half-length ! away. At -the -start. fDevotion and Quinri's Post, on the fence, '•wero quickest to begin, while Eongora jwas slow in finding her feet. ' > Down the ;oack Bairnsdale, Thoughtful, and Mas'cot were prominent behind the leaders. IQuinn's Post led into tho straight, with Devotion, Bairnsdale, and Thoughtful at ithe head of the others. Devotion took charge inside tho distance, but Bplendant coming with'a late run got up in time to win by a nose. Thoughtful, ; Sir (Agues, Quinn's Post, Eevalenta, and Glorify followed in that ordor. Lingerie, Bonny, Effort, and Matilda were the withdrawals from tho Taita ■Handicap. - The • Demosthenes oolt Silnonides was made an odds-on favourite, and he was the good thing suggested by the machine, for, after hanging out badlyall the way and appearing to bo beaten, he came again in. the straight, and won [very easily. Acre just beat Vermillion, una the remainder finished in a lino. The winner is good, and it is a pity that ho tannot bo kept straight on tho course. Nones and Taringanrutu were _ the machine favourites in the big Handicap, for which tho seventeen acceptors faced itho (barrier. There was'a Tong delay at ,the start, and after misbehaving Rewi . jiPoto and Orleans were put on tho outtide. The dispatch'was a good one, all moving off well together, with the exception of Montana, who was slow.on hi 9 ,'feeti TaTingamutu tied out of the .straight, but was soon supplanted, by jßleriot, who led down tho baok; followed 'by Taringamutu,, Biorneborg, Fiery '.Cross, Gold Soult; and Square Deal. The (positions were practically the-same into {the straight, where Taringamutu.: and [Gold Soult were prominent, but over the 3ast bit Nones came fast, and won vnice|ly at the finish.. Master Moutoa was .fourth, and then came..' Square' Deal, ■Bjoraeborg, Seddel ' Bahr, and" Fiery |Ci'oss. Tho winner's performance _ was igood, as she was one of the rear division (going down tho back. ~■•'. There' was n. very big field in the October Hack Handicap, fivo. furlongs, i'and owing to tho fact that the totalisator i.would only accommodate 24 horses thcro Tras a general mix-up, and after things ,'woro straightened out the difficulty was .'jeot over by altoringJthe numbers on' the /machine; Several of the runners wero 'well backed. Shiela, who drew No. 1 iat the barrier, jumped out smartly, and lied tho whole way. At the straight entrance she was tackled br Struggle, who ■ptarted wide out, and after a great ■'finish she beat tho Bezonian filly by a 'head. Tressida, who was well baoked, !was close up, and then eamo Kocknold, who is on tho improve, and may shapo; •well in the Auckland Guineas. Marco Bello and Ladogenr were with•idrawn from the Wainni Handicap, and
tho three-year-old i Egypt was made a ' Rood favourite, with. Merry Roo next. At the start tho latter got squeezed out, and 'Chakwana 'led from Ceasefwe, Hyllua, , Lady Louisa, Multiply, ' and George. Hyllu.i rushed . out by ihimself at tho six furlongs, and was tw.o /'lengths clear of Egypt, Lady Louisa, {and Cease Piro at the half-mile/ Entering tbe straight, Hyllus and Egypt wero I'together, but Merry Roe had made up Ser ground, and was coming fast. . Iniside the distance she got, on terms, and l.won by a length, -with Egypt a. head in ''front of Heeltap. George, Hyllue, Multiply, and Chakwana were the next to jifiuish. The winner is engaged in tho [•Now Zealand Cup, for which sbo is well I fancied, and after her showing yesterday ishe is not likely to losojany of lor supporters. ' . ■' ■.-.'■
'■ They wore a good-looking lot in tiiv •.Wellesley Stakes. Estland and Crowfturst both moved troll in the preliminary and the former was, made a good fal.vourite. Birkenvale and Astrophel were fractions at the barrier, but the start ,was a good one. Ample showed great ipaco over' the first part, but at tho two ■furlongs Crowhurst was in charge, and (from that out won easily. He was jtwo clear lengths in front of Estland at ;.tho post, while Ample' just beat Birken[valo for third place. Mountjoy, La ; Tasse, and Matilda wero the next to flu- . isli. R. Reed rodo the winner, and he (was also on Rookbound last year'. The •!:wliiner is ownod by Mr. Henry Gaisford, ■of Dannevirkc, but Mr. Gaisford was Dot -present to see his colt win, as ho is laid aside by illnes. Crowhurst comes from ia good family, being out of Happy Valley |'< Wallace—Faraway). Ho was bred by '.his owner, but strangoly enough he is ,not cngage'd in tho .C.J.C. Welcome •Stakes, for which there is no penalty for 'yesterday's raco.
Bimctcr was a good favourite for tlio Shorts Handicap, and ho ran a good race, but the last bit found him oMt. At ;fho start the colours of Miss Do Val, Jleokbouiid, Centre, Monebius, and Tiuo Atua were prominent. Halfway down (ho running- Tino Atna and Miss Do Val wero cloar of tlio others', but Bimeter .then ranged up, and a little further on Oflnorson brought Kangitoro along to the front with a rattle. Bimeter was soon done with but Kangitero, Tinb Atua, and Miss He Val fought out a gjreat finish, and passedjtho post in a line, tho verdict going to Kangitero. Ifenelaua end Bimeter wore close up. 1 DETAILS OF THE RACING. Details of Hie racing are:— FIRST HACK &, HUNTERS' STEEPLECHASE, of 200 sovs. Two miles and a half. 2 Mr It. T. Taylor's b. g. ACCEPTANCES FOR TO-DAY
THE FIELDS REVIEWED. Bij; fields will again be seen, out in the diiferent events to-day. In the Champion Plate the galloping maohine, Desert Gold, will be seen under silk for the first time this season. She is very forward, and is, certain to bo a. great favourite. It is to be hoped Nones and Merry Koe will ho amongst the runners, and it' the mare can be extended it will bo by this pair. Two place-getters in the Steeplechase, riz., Critio and ICauwairoa, have paid up again, and tho pair may hold the key to the situation. , Critio is well seasoned and he and Buatangata may be found disputing the issue at tho finish. Atuatoro is top-weight in the Tararua Handicap, one mile. . Tho black horse carries weight well, and should show up in this class. Miss De Val will probably start in tho Pearoo Handicap. Bongora will ho suited by the distance; In tho Buahine Handicap, six furlongs, Elation will make hia first appearanco of tho meeting. He was equal to beating Splendant in tho Wanganui Guineas, and third in the open Hying on the second day. ftockfield was finishing on well yesterday, and will be better suited with a furlong further td-day. Tho Wejlcsley Stakes winner. Crowhurst, won so easily yesterday that ho may defeat the youngsters again to^ay. In the Pearco Handicap, one mile,- all the top-weights have dropped out. Rinaldo.now shows the way. and with Bs't. 41b. ho should ho woll up at the finish, as he is now nearly at the top of his form. Bleriot, Bjorneborg, and Miss I)o Val can all bo expected to run good races..
In tho Nainai Handicap Tino Atua, Menelaus, and lady Black, all good beginners, will have an 'advantage over'tho others. This trio wero well prominent at this stage yesterday. Splendant may ho at a short price-in the Spring' Trial Stakes, in which there is a big field.
