The Countess of Glasgow, who has been on a visit to Ceylon and India, to join Lord Glasgow during his furlough, arrived back in Wellington yesterday by the Manuka. She was met ou arrival by her sou, Lord Kelburn, and a number of her friends.

Flight-Lieut., Proctor arrived from Australia by the Manuka yesterday.

Private Hugh Oswald Gillies (son of Mr. Hugh Gillies, of Palmerstou North), who has died of wounds, left the Dominion with a draft of horses and joined the ' Tenth Reinforcements in Egypt, being transferred soon after to the Otago Infantry Battalion, proceedin" to France with the latter. Deceased, who was 32 years of age, was a very popular member of the Oroua Lodge of Druids. He also took a keen interest in hunting and A. and P. Show competitions. His brother Norman was wounded last week.

Tho Rev. Father Bartley, S.M., M.A., assistant priest at St. Mary's, Nelson, has been appointed Chaplain-Captain at Featherston Camp. Private I. E. A. Nicholls, who has been killed in action, was a dentist at Palmerstoir North before enlisting. During his residenco in Palmerston North he was closely connected with All Saints' Church, and was a member of the choir" and also of the Church of .England Men's Society. Mr. William Smith, a retired officer of the Post and Telegraph Department, died in Nelson last week. Deceased, who was seventy-four years of age, received his training iu telegraphy in Scotland. He was electrician under Dr. Lemon, then Superintendent of Telegraphs at Wellington, and afterwards officer in charge for the Government at Cable Bay. Later he served a lengthy period in the Nelson Telegraph Office, retiring several years ago. He leaves a widow and grown-up family. Colonel Carruthers, a medical officer from India, at present on furlough, arrived here by the Manuka yesterday morning.
