THE TURF

SPRING RACES MEETING AT TRENTHAM

Only fiuo weather,is required to make to-day's meeting a success. Big fields aro engaged in tho different events and the contests' promise to be keen. Tho usual up-to-date train arrangements have been made and the times of departure aro as follow :-To Aro depart 10.21 and 10.39, Lainbton depart, 10.10, 10.19, 10.37, 10.55, 11.4 a.m. ; and 12.6 p.m. Racing will commence at noon with the Hack • and Hunters' Steeplechase, two miles and a half. Thoro is a good-sized field engaged, but quality is lacking and from this point of viow it will be tho poorest tbcb of tho meoting. Ruatangata, tho top-weight, doe 3 not jump too well, but Critic is a safe conveyance, and What is more is well seasoned with racing. This will be a big factor in his favour at the. end of the long journey. Another horse that is similarly oircumstanced is Mawson, who comes from Riccarton. Kauwairoa is a beautiful jumper but the distance will find him out. Silver Monarch may be at homo if tho going is heavy. Mo'rry Dalo and Ima Ribbon aro unlikely starters in tho Bimutaka Handicap, Bovon furlongs. The top-weight. Golden Grafton, is looking and going well, but if the track is heavy 6ho may not be seen at her best.' Sir Agnes, on tho other hand, goes well in heavy going and seems a greatly improved horso since ho raced at Opaki. Thoughtful, also, likes the sting out of tho ground and has his Opaki win to recommend him to baokers. Splendant may bo favourite and with Deoley in tho 6addle ho may bo expected to do better than ho did at WanganuL Pourparlen shaped well in. soft going at Hastings, but in her case, as-in several others, during the day tho trouble will be to get suitable riders. Black Night has been galloping well in private and . will have plenty of supporters. Lingerie,' the top-weight in tho Taita Handicap, seems to bo shaking off her cough, and if saddled up to-day may be favourite. She has the advantage of being a very good beginner, and has had a race. Simonides is too uncertain and Acre,, who is one of the aristocrats of tho field, may want a raco. The following are the probable starters and their riders in the big handicap:— Tai'ingamutu, Bst. 121b. (A. Oliver) Nones, Bst. 121b. (B. Deoley) Eowi Poto, Bst. 71b. (C. Price) Mullingar, Bst; 31b. (C. Carmont) 'Gold Soult, Sst. lib. (C. Emerson) Squaro Deal, Sst. (A. Eeed) Bleriot, Bst. (Thompson) . Montana, 7st. 131b. (C. Browne) Fiery Cross, 7st. 111b. (J. Olsen) Adjutant, 7st. 101b. (H. Young) Bjorneborg, 7st. 9]b. (R. Manson) ' Orleans, 7st. 71b. (E. Manson) Maniaroa, 7st. 31b. (H. Goldfinch) Sedd-el-Bahr, 7st.. (E. Read) Master Moutoa, 6st. 10lb. (B. Morris) Settler, 6st, 71b. (M"Kay) . Rose Pink, fct. 71b. (C. Reed) The event is regarded as most open and it is difficult to say which horso will carry most money. Taringamutu will be up against a better field than she met at Utafci, and has plenty of weight. Nones is a class mare' when right, and with the. racing she had at Wanganui and the galloping she has done since, tho Martian maro should be faifly right today. Eewi Pote, Bst. 71b., is nicely placed and can be .depended upon to run a. great race. Mullingar looks a picture, nicety.Gold Soult requires firm going, »lf l{ he Iv 8 '\ lB t(sdß y the otll ers wUI ?h„ «ff ey been galloping by Deal has many friends because of hisgood work on the tracks. Fiery Cross ZfriS Val e % for the Potion of fa! ct fl ah Miss De Yal are unlikelv starters m tie, October. Handicap T'£hl will leave a field of thirty, which will be fnough to deter a lot of bSrs from having a pecuniary interest in the So? Hyto may find.the distance too sSrt," mftfSi i l '! ?- ?e ' of tloso.horses that begins weU,.at times,-and at othere he dqes not.. Only a good beginner can navo a chance in such a field. Merry Andrew and Tressida belong to this claS Jlomeno is also a S mart beginner, but tho distance may be beyond the Ellerslieammal. Sabana and Shiela are likely on the light-weights. . it the weather is bad, Merry Eoe who is very well, will be a popular'choice in the WamurHandicap, for she is a great mudlark. Seadown and Chakwana will have plenty of supporters on a good track, and so will Egypt and Ladogiier. Georges form at Masterton was too bad to be true, and he should do better today..

In the Wellesley Stakes several of the youngsters will make their first appearance. • Esbland has had a couple of races, and will be wall fancied. Birkenvale, by Birkenhead, is a fine-looking colt but hardly ready. On a heavy track he would- probably act up to the traditions of his family, and go well. Orowhurst is-'a, good mover, but wants the track firm, fiymncstra has a great private reputation, and the public form oi Trentham Boss is sufficient to recommend her. She is a great beginner, and should be well year of the mix-up usually seen at the stait of juvenile events. A'* j track the top-weights in tfie biorts Handicap can all be .written out, whereas Sea Lord and Bisogne have both repeatedly shown their ability to gallop well when the sting is out of the ground. • Rangitero. may be. the public lancy, and Goidstream mil also come in for plenty of support,, as he has been hatting out very freely in his work. Of the light-weight division, Miss De Vnl may be the best fancied.

Matterß in connection with the'Steadowned horses at present in Melbourne seem to be very mixed. This week B. Beeley received a very tempting offer to go oyer and ride the horses at the V.B.C. meeting. He cancelled his engagements here, and intended leaving on Tuesday next, but a later cablegram was received withdrawing the offer. Deeley then reengaged himself in the Dominion, and yesterday was surprised to receive still another cablegram asking him to go to Remington. UndeT the circumstances he declined, and will be at Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup meeting. Private advices received here yesterday state that Sasanof has been knocked right back in the Caulfield Cup market, and his. place has been taken by Lavendo, last year's winner. The imported horse has a big weight (9st. 21b.), but it is not a prohibitive one, and has been carried before. Several horses have won the Caulfield Cup. twice, and Xavendo may' do . the samo thing. Strangely enough, his stable companion, Torbane, by Tprpoint, is in the market, and ranks as second choice, He won the Solo Welter on. Saturday, and the Coongy Handicap, one mile and three furlongs, on Wednesday. The last-named was a much better gallop than Cyklon put up in the Eclipse Stakes, run over the eamo course and it might prove a very .reliable Caiilfield Cup 'trial. ■•■
