SHORTAGE OVER 900

STATE OF, 22ND REINFORCEMENTS

The Ota."o section' of the Twentysecond Reinforcements went into camp yesterday, the men arriving from the south by steamer in the morning entraining for the camps at Lambton station. The draft from the West Coast, which forms part of tho Canterbury Military District, is expected to reach Wellington to-morrow and enter camp on Monday. This will complete the mobilisation, and it apparent that tho total shortage is going to exceed 900 men, made us as follows:— Wellington 287 'Auckland 169 Canterbury 231 Ot-aao tobont) 225

This total will be increased by the amount of the AVest Coast shortage.

The districts have all been asked to send in additional men to cover their shortages, but preliminary reports make it clear that the supplementary drafts, will not bo largo, in spite of the special' appeals that are being made by the recruiting organisations. Group 6 ' (Wellington City _ and Suburbs) for example, still requires somo 40 men who are willing to enter camp on Wednesday next, but most of the new recruits are selecting either the 23rd or 24th Reinforcements. They would ho rendering an important service to the Defence Department if they would transfer to next week's draft.
