GRATITUDE OF OURI SOLDIERS. ■ ■ Captain • Beamish, * officer.: commanding the troops on the Devon,, has .writtea as follows to the Mayor:—"On bohalf of-the troops on-the s.s. Devon, I have "to 1 tender you for conveyance to .the Mayor's Patriotic Committee tho sincere thanks of the men for' so kindly placing on board a piano for their recreation; also for the forty cases of apples which ■ your - committeo so 1 thoughtfully supplied. All ranks reigrct that' circumstances did not allow of their partaking of the citizens' proposed hospitality, mentioned in your fetter, but fully appreciate the fact that -we had. been thought of in that regard; and return our grateful thanks accordingly." . In the courso of a further letter to the Mayor, Captain Beamish wrote:— "A case of cakes addressed to you was placed aboard the s.s. Devon, but the name of the actual donor cannot be ascertained. On our behalf, please' accept or convey my sincere thanks for tlie gift." This case of cakes was placed on board the Devon by the Mayoress's Committee. (Countess of Liverpool Fund). ■ Replying to a letter of farewell from tlie Mayor, Captain Beamish, in concluding an appreciative letter, wrote:— "Wo recognise that New Zealandcrs have already achieved something on tho field of battle, and we can only trust what we do will not detract from trie good namo so dearly won, but will help to success tlie jcause that we all have so mucli at heart." Captain B. D. Ashcroft, of the Pakeha, also returns thanks for the piano placed on board that vessel. Lieutenant A. S. Tonkin writes to the Mayor (Mr. .J. P. Luke) as follows: —"I wish, on behalf of the men of my company, to convey to you and your' Patriotic Committee, my best thanks for your action ,in forwarding to us cricket material ?or our use. Such a gift was very acceptable, and is greatly appreciated. We shall, as you know, be leaving New Zealand shortly, and so.will not have any airther use for tlie outfit,- but wo shall hand it over to some company of a later Reinforcement for lis use."
