WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION

AND MOTOR AMBULANCES. • / i. A very urgent appeal for money for motor ambulances has been made to tho War Relief Association by Lord Ranfurly, through Mr. J. B. Pinlay, secretary of the St. John Ambulance Association, Wellington. It was origin, ally intended that some twenty-four ambulances belonging to the New Zealand Force should be sent from New Zealand to England for the service of hospitals qpxclusively devoted to the caTe of New Zealand troops. It happened, however, that the vehicles arrived at Marseilles just at the moment when the "great push" was beginning, and they. were_ appropriated _by tho military authorities for immediate use at the front. In consequence- of this, Colonel Parkes has-found himself unable to provide hospitals in England under his charge with motor ambulances. Wairarapa has sent £750, and Taranaki £600 for ambulances for use in France, but these are at present being used in England, to the great satisfaction of Colonel Parkes, Chief Medical Officer of New Zealand hospitals. The question of a grant from the War Relief Association of Wellington has been discussed, and after approval had been received from the Governor, who represents the combined St. John and Red Cross Societies, it was unanimously decided to send £1300 at once to the New Zealand War Contingent Association for the purchase of two motor ambulances. ■As those commandeered by the military authorities have now been sent to England, as was originally intended, they being unfit for. the rough work to be done in Franco, the motor ambulances contributed by tho Wairarapa, Hawera, and Wellington Associations will be used for conveying our wounded from the front to where they can get medical attention as quickly as possible. i
