Tho Hon. G. W. Russell is due back from Whangarei to-day. Commander Armstrong, of the Auxiliary Patrol Committee, _ went south by the Mararoa last evening. The Hon. W. G. F. Carncross, Sir James Carroll, and Mr. E. P. Lee, M.P., threo of the representatives of the Neiv Zealand Legislature, who visited England as guests of the British Parliamentary Association, are expected to return to the Dominion in about threie weeks' time, say 6 thia "New Zealand Herald." A cablegram was received on Tuesday evening, says our Masterton correspondent, stating that Lieutenant Leslie Maunsell, of Masterton, who has been wounded in France, has been awarded tho Military Cross for bravery on the field of battle. Advice has been received that Sergeant E. J. Carey, who for many .years was secretary of the Hotel and Restaurant Workers' Union, was wounded in aotion on October 2. Sergeant- Carey left New Zealand with the 13th Reinforcement. The Baptist Union Congress, sitting at Dunedin, has elected the following exocutive officers for the ensuing year: —President, Rev. J. K. Aroher; vicepresident, Rev. W. S. Rollings; secretary, Rev. 11. S. Gray; treasurer, Mr. W. Lambourne; finance secretary, Rev. A. North.—Press Association. Mr. Frank Sutherland, of Wellington, has received cable advice from the Defenco Department, reporting that Sergeant Coliu Reid had been wounded in France on October 1. Sergeant Reid was at one time on the mechanical staff of The Dominion, and wa6 also a prominent member of the Thistle Football Club. He loft New Zealand with the Tenth Reinforcements. Mr. G. P. Harris, partner in tho Nattrass and Harris Motor Co., Ltd., Napier, was killed in action in Franca on September 15.
Wellington telegraph operators assembled last evening to express to their superintendent (Mr. Talbot) appreciation of what he has done for them ill the matter of improving their hours. Sir. Talbot came to Wellington from Ohristchurch about seven months ago, and the staff are more than pleased with what he has done for them in that short time. At the gathering Mr. R. L. Townsend, on behalf of the staff, presented Mr. Talbot with the following letter of appreciation:—"We, the undersigned operators of the Telegraph Office, Wellington, desire to express our warmest appreciation of your efforts on our behalf. The kindly interest which you have taken in all matters pertaining to the welfare of tha staff, more particularly with regard to the inauguration of a Saturday half-holiday duty-sheet, has engendered the utmost good feeling. It is recognised that in the compilation of this duty-sheet you have spared neither time nor pains, and wo are satisfied that it has proved an unqualified success. We trust the cordial relations existing will long he sustained."
Mr. Kenneth 6. Turner, third Eon of the late Mr. C. W. Turner, of Christchurch, and an old resident of Timaru, died at hlg residence in Timaru yesterday morning. The late Mr. Turner was educated at Christ's College, and then joined the New Zealand Loan Company. About twenty-five years ago he left that company and went to Timaru as mana-< ger of the Belford Flour Mill Company, which position he oconpied during tho time he lived in Tin-mra. He was in hi* forty-ninth year, and was a very prominent Freemason. He was a pastmaster of the St. John Lodire, Timaru. and also of St. Auburn's Lodge, and was Past District Grand Warden of Canterbury. He was also chairman of' the Tiinaru Chamber of Commerce about two years ago. He had been ill for the last ten weeks, and hopelessly, ill for the last four weeks. Ho leaves a widow and one grown-up daughter, and his brothers arp: Liettt.-Colonel, Turner, at present Commandant, ati Motuilii Island, Auckland, and iMr.Clarence Turner, aoting branch manager for tho Blackball Coal Company in.' Wellington, who proceeded south by the Mararoa last evening in order to; attend the funeral. The late Nr. Tur-, ner will be buried th* l Papanul Churchyard, where his father was' bnricd. Mr. J. Farrell arrived from Auck-" land yesterday in connection with the season of the J. C. Williamson Co., which is to open with "It rays to Advertise."
