THE BASIN RESERVE
NEVER LOOKED BETTER.
Not for many years has the Basin Reserve looked so trim, green, and generally spruce as this spring. After long years of neglect sonio attention has been diverted 1 from Nos., 1 and 2 pitches to tho ground generally, with the result that tho eastern side lias lost its drab expression, and a fino solid mat of green turf extends on every hand right out to the encircling walk. That ill-shaped and depressing bit of imprisoned garden that one could foggily seo through tho high palings of tho entrance at the head of Cambridge Terrace has been swept avray into the limbo of forgotten things, and l in its place is a bankof inviting green sward. On tho fountain sido one may gather what the new inside fence is to resemblo. On tho eminence that is crowned by the Grecian fountain (a sort of cramped' Temple of Apollo) has been erected a line of tho now reinforced concrete posts which are to bo tho in a ill stay of the new fence to ho erected inside tho garden border that is to encircle tho reserve. These aro fairly massivo posts (12 inches square), with neat ornamental panels (done in the casting) and a squaro mortar-board kind of top that looks -well. The spaccs in between these posts (which aro 7ft. in height) aro to ho closely and neatly boarded to a heieht of sft. 6in, This fence is to be painted, not allowed to gatlior the green moss - of neglect on its original skin. The Basin Reservo of the future promises to bo an oasis in a rather drab aud uninteresting, desert of houses.
