STIRRING APPEAL FROM THE BATTLE FRONT Australian-New Zealand Oable Association, (Rcc. October 17, 5.40 p.m.) London, October 16. Major W. Redmond, in a letter recapitulating the gallant services of the 16th Division (Irish), emphasises the need for immediate reinforcements, and adds: "It will be a thousand pities, aud we shall betray the heroic dead, if the division which, has brought eo much honour to the Irish name ceases to be Irish. Officers and men confidently hope that all who love Ireland will unite, irrespective of creed and politics, and hasten to respond to our appeal on behalf of the division, which hitherto has been awarded over threo hundred military honours." SIDE BY SIDE WITH ULSTER. (Heutcr'B Telesrram.) (Rec.i October 17, 545 p.m.) London, October 16. Major Redmond, in bis appeal, relates that one attack with poison gas in its most concentrated form _ was directed against the Irish division, which suffered heavily. "But Providence was on our side. The wind changed suddenly, and the gas blew back into the enemy's trenches, where the Bavarians wero ready, massed for the_ attack. The enemy was taken by surprise, and left their front line end ran across the open, where they were mown down by our artillery. Thirteen hundred were killed, of which a largo number died f.rom the effects of the gas. Once our division aud the Ulster division held the line side by sido."
