NOTES AND COMMENTS

• Tho Victorian Amateur Turf Club's Meeting will be continued to-morrow. Tho Eolipso Stakes, • a weight-for-ago event of eleven.furlongs, will see all the best horses engaged. Probably Sasanof, who is now at a very short price for tho Caulfield Cup, will 'be given a run and. will be opposed by Lavcndo, second favourito for tho Caulfield Cup. The Aucklander. Master Regal, is engaged in the Emo Hurdles, two miles. Passengers by the Sydney boat yestorday included the chief stipendiary. .1. Al'M&hon, who has been on furlough in Sydney, and .Trainer T. P. Quinlivan. Tho latter brought back four horses of Mr. E. J. Watt's. They aro Llanishen, Hendra (who is to bo tried at hurdling), and the two-year-olda Skysorape (Tho Welkin—Cane Hatteras) and Sunbright (Sunshine—Supercilious). W. M'Laohlan has had some lucky and remunerative mounts in his time, and Kilboy in the A.J.C. Derby aided to the number. He was engaged before that colt changed hands, and was then laid XlflOO about a win by Messrs. Stead and Luttroll, the colt's new owners. This 6um was in addition to his winning percentage of .£228 17s. Perhaps the fact of so much depending •on success made M'Lachlan over-anxious, as after being squee7/ed back at least twice at the side when attempting to improve his position, he took Kilboy from about thirteenth at the mile post to.second at the six furlongs. "That settles him," was the comment of some of the favourite's 'backers, but the eolid preparation ho had gone thrugh stood to the New Zealand colt. Just after passing tho Lcger ho was tackled by two or three others, and Connell, on Eastcourt, says he actually headed him. However, Kilboy went right away again in the last fifty yards, and though it was possible to fault M'Lachlan's judgment earlier in the-race, there was certainly nothing lacking in the vigor of his finish. Tho New Zealand-bred De Gama was favourite for tho Stand Handicap at tho V.R.C.Octobor Meeting, but though he got no closer than fifth he is said to have finished well, and perhaps, at the coming Spring meetings ne will return Mr. Timms a portion of the large sum ho gave for him some time back. Dc Gama has not • won a Tace for about a year and nine months. ' Advices received by G. Price by yesterday's mail, state that L. H. Hewitt is leaving Sydney on Thursday and will remain here over the New Zealand Gup fixture.-^ For this Caulfield Cup, to be run on , Saturday next, the New Zealand-bred Sasanof is a hot order. Ho is to be ridden by. that capable light-weight, F. Dempsey, unless, as a Sydney writer naively suggests, Mr. Stead changes his mind in the meanwhile. Square Deal has arrived at Trentham and is looking and' galloping well. The 6on of Advance' is a peculiar horse and gallops better- on some tracks than he does on otherß. One of the latter is Otaki, at which course he has regularly failed, while at Wanganui ho always shows up well. From Haw.era tho death is announced of Mr. J. A. Turtou, who for some years had acted as secretary of the Egauont Racing Club. Mr/ Turton had- not been in- bis usual health for some time past, and recently underwent an operation. The District Committee of the Wellington Racing Club met last Friday to hear the appeals of S. -W. Tatham against the action of the Horowhcnua Ricing Club in awarding tho stake. to Master Mouton. The appeal was dismissed, but it is understood the. Racing Conference Mvill be asked t* finally adjudicate on the matter. W. G. Trask, trainer of Keynote, who was susponded for alleged doping, also' appealed, and his appeal was upheld. ' Tho published statement that Tarangamutu has been withdrawn, from tho Chßmpion Plato at Trontham is incorrcot. . Tho acceptances received for tho handicaps at Trentham on- the opening day aro exceptionally hig, and reflect credit on tho club's handicappeiy Mr. H. Coyle. Out of twenty entrants for the Steeples fifteen havo paid up. .Twenty-three horses, figure in the seven furlongs hack race, and thirty-three in tho five-fur-longs event. The Juvenile Handicap is tho poorest event as far as numbers aro concerned, there being eleven acceptors. All the best horses are engaged in the big handicap, the defections being Colonel Soult,_ Depredution, Kinaldo, and Hyllus. 'Nineteen is'tho number in the Wainui Handicap, .in which there are several New Zealand Cup candidates engaged.. Altogether, everything points to a record meeting. The tracks aro 'in perfect order, and provided tho grass Is kept short, Desert Gold can be expected to crcato noir figures in tho Champion Plate. ...-.-■ Tho Welkin filly which T. F. Quinlivan brought back from Sydney yesterday, is to bo nominated for the 'handicap events at the coming Riccarton meeting.
Winkie'was scratched for all engagements at tho Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting at 9 a.m. yesterdav, says a Press Association telegram from Christchurch. '
