.IW-SV WJIAJIVBS. Testa-day morning Ihe wharves bore a. much busier appearance than they hn.ve for some considerable time, and tho waterside workers hod plenty of work lo do. Not including the various tugs and other vessels which do not leave the harbour, there woro thirty-four vessels busy unloading and loading nt the wharves, and these included quite a largo number of overscan vessels. Tho larger vcssclb were: -Turakinn, 8349 Ions; Wiiloehra, 7786 tons; Kaikourn. 6938 tons; Rivcrina. 4758 tons; Booral, 4522 tons; Vermont, 4271 tons'; and .tho Monowai. 3433 lons. Tho wharves will show a much less busy scene within the course of to-day and to-morrow, howevor, when most of the larger boats And also tho smaller ones will have gone on their wa.ys.

WJMMEUA. DDE THTIRSDAT. The iluddarlrParker Company advise that the Wimmcra left Melbourne at 12.30 p.m. on Saturday, and should arrive in Wellington on Thursday morning. Sho has 40 passengers and 720 tons of cargo for Wellington, and after discharging ,will leavo at 5 p.m. on .Saturday for Melbourne, via southern ports. Labour Day will mako tho vessel ono day late leaving Bluff, and her dates of departure from tho southern ports will be: Lyttelton, October 24; Ihincdin. October 26; and finally Bluff, October 27.

RIVERINA'FROM SYDNEY. This week's' Sydney hoa,t, the Rivcrina, arrived in port shortly before noon yesterday, and berthed at No. 1 North Queen's Wharf. Tho vessel left flydnoy at 5 n.in. on Thursday, and calm seas and ligh; south-westorly breezes wcro experienced. Sho has 1076 tons of cargo to land here, •which includes a large quantity of Japanese merchandise. She brought transhipments ex the following steamers:—Tango Maru, Tasman, Houtniar, Morca, St. Albans, Canberra., Wyreema, Bnuninyong, Tinarra, Corio, Katoomba, Kcaiauaia, Strathcndrick. Tho Rivcrina sails-at 5 p.m. to-day for Lyttelton, and will arrive back hero early on Thursday morning in order to be able to sail at 11 a.m. on that day for Sydney, where sho is to undergo repairs in her engine room.

HTjRTJNTJI FROM NEW YORK. Tlie Huruhui, according to advice received fi'om Australia, is to leave Melbourne to-night for Sydney, where she will arrive on Thursday. She will leave Sydney about October 25, and, after going to Auckland, is duo in Wellington about November 5 or 6.

WAITOMO AT AUCKLAND. . From Calcutta-, the Union Company's Waitomo arrived at Auckland on Friday, morning. The vessel left Wellington on Juno 20 last with a cargo of Wcstport cool for Singapore. In misty weather she- ran ashore at Rattray Island, and 1300 tons of cargo had to be jettisoned and another 600 tons lightered before she could be refloated. Aftor being ashore a, week she was finally refloated, and went to Edgecomb Bay, and after being examined by a diver she "went on to Cleveland Bay, Townsville, whore she was fixed up for the trip to Singapore. After'discharging at Singapore she went into dry.dock and had two now plate 6 fitted. She then went on to Calcutta to pick up cargo, and left there on September 7. She arrived at Bunbury for bunkers on September 20, and left again on September 28. Since leaving Wellington 13,854 miles have been covered. Hor departure from Auckland has been postponed until noon to-morrow, owing to congestion in the Auckland sheds, and she will arrive here on Friday evening. Captain Harris is in charge of the steamer. \_- SERVICE FROM JAPAN TO AUSTRALIA. The remarkable expansion of tho trade between Japan and Australia, and the possibilities of still further development, has, says a Sydney paper, caused another company to decide upon establishing another sorvico between Kobe, Yokohama, and the main ports of Australia. The line will cater for tho cargo traffic only, several vessols suitable for that business being available, and it is Tcported that the first sailing will bo mado this month. From what can be ascertained, the steamers will at first be dispatched monthly, but as trado conditions expand more frequent sailings will be arranged for. Negotiations regarding agency work have been, opened up with a Sydney firm well known in shipping circles, and a- further announcement is oruectcd at an early (late. BLACKBALL BOATS. Instead of going to Greymouth yesterday the departure of the Ngakuta has been postponed until this afternoon. The Ngohcro will probably come U> Wellington lato in tho month for cleaning and painting, but no arrangements have yet been made. The Ngatoro, at present en route from Greymouth to Napier, will call into Wellington on her way back, and should get in here about the end of this week. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Captain W..Manning has signed off tho Mararoa, and Captain 0. M'Lean, late of the Warrimoo, has taken his place. Mr. D. J. Slorriß, extra officer on the Victoria, has signed off. - Mr. A. H. Howie, extra officer on the Monowai, has come ashore. Mr S. Thorns has signed on the, Kapuni as mate, in place of Mr. V. Johansen, who has signed off the ship's articles. ; Mr. T. Foßter, fourth engineer on tho < Rivcrina, left that vessel during her last trip to Sydney, and was replaced by Mr. A. Fowle. Mr. R. K. Duckworth and Mr. L. W. Mount, pursers on the Corinna and Pateena respectively, have changed places. Mr. A. C. Fell, in the local office of Messrs. Levin and Co.. .has joined as a lieutenant in the Auxiliary Patrol. Captain Cravon is now in charge of the Port Nicholson, in place of Captain Hollis, who, as was mentioned previously, has prooeoded to Australia, to tako up tho position of Marine Superintendent tor tho Commonwealth and Dominion 'Line. Captain Mason, formerly chief officer on the Port- Adelaide, has now taken charge of that vessel.

The Katoa, which arrived in port from Singapore, via Samarang, on Saturday with 1500 tons of general cargo and a, quantity of jaa'rah timber, is to leavo Wellington to-night for Picton, where sho is to pick up a part,cargo of chatt, and will then go on to Auckland direct. Sho is receiving Wellington cargo until noon today. On completion of discharge at Auckland, the Katoa will dock for annual overhaul and survey. Tho Waverley, which came off the Patent Slip yostcrday. sails for Palea toMessrs. Johnston and Co. advise that tho Blonholm, which soiled for Ho.vclock and Pelorus- Sound pesterday. will arrive backin Wellington on Thursday, and will probably sail for Wanganui on Friday.
