MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. L. G. Raid occupied the bench at Saturday's sitting of the Magistrate's Court. "It is evident that this was a most unprovoked and brutal assault," said His Worship when he had heard the evidence in the case of William Newman, who was charged with having assaulted Joseph Millor. It appears that Miller was standing at a hotel bar having a drink when accused without any warning went up to him and delivered a heavy blow to tho face. According to Inspector Hendrey, Newman Jias a "shocking" record, so the Magistrate fined him £3, in default one month's imprisonment. A young man named Horaco Jamels Doig was charged with having stolen a rolled gold watch and a metal watch, the property of Jeffrey Godfrey Sheehan. Tho total value of the articles was assessed at £5 3s. 6d. Doig pleaded guilty, and Inspector Hendrey asked that ho bo remanded till Saturday next for sentence on account of accused being a perfect stranger to the police, and they wished to make some inquiries. Tlio Magistrate agreed to this course being taken. A plea of guilty was entered by James M'Michael, alias John Williams, when he was charged with the theft, of a pair of boots valued at 13s. 6d., the property of Edwards and Sons. Aconstablo saw accused endeavouring to conceal something underneath his coe.t. Ho was searched, and the boots found. At first M'Michael said that he had bought them from a man in the street whom he didn't know, but later he admitted tho theft. A fino of £3, in default a month's imprisonment, was imposed. Daniel M'Randle, who had previous convictions against him for drunkennoss, was fined 10s., in default three days' imprisonment.
