WELLINGTON AUTOMOBILE CLUB
e The annual meeting of the Wellington Automobile Club is to be held to-night. Following are the important sections of the annual report to bo presented:— "The unsettled state of affairs in consequence of the war has prevented your committee from taking up certain matters of general interest to motorists, but under the circumstances progress may be considered satisfactory, and your committee considers that the club can bo specially congratulated on the amount of patriotic .work that it lias been oalled upon to assist in during the year, and takes this opoprtunity of thanking those members who have so generously placed their cars at the,disposal of the committee. "Tho year commenced with a membership of 125, and ended with 130.: One resignation was acceptcd ; twelve names were struck off tho register, and ten members who aro away on active service wore retained on tho register as honorary mombcrs until their return. "Owing to tho policy adopted by the Government of cutting down expenditure on publio works, your committee has been compelled to refrain from the usual agitation with regard to improvements required in the district; but on several occasions your committco has requested the City Council to mako improvements to some roads within tho City boundary which has been, on tho whole, satisfactorily rosponded to. "In view of tho general feeling throughout the Dominion that tho present system of maintaining main roads is, in consequence of tho increased uso of motor-cars, becoming unsatisfactory; the union in order to assist towards the proper consideration of tho subject, and to obtain wider information, i s offering a prize for tiho best treatise on the subject, entries for which close on March 18, 1917.
"Members have generously responded to tho civic and patriotic authorities numerous requests for tho uso of their cars at various functions. A list of names was supplied to the Hospital authorities of members who aro prepared to send their cars ouo day per week to tho Hospital for the use of returned wounded.soldiers. Your committee, in February last, invited returned soldiers to a garden party, which was held at Mr. J. Barton's, of Trontham, who kindly lent his grounds for tho occasion. Upwards of seventy returned soldiers responded to the invitation, and over fifty cars took part in the run airf a most enjoyable afternoon was spent. "Your committee has supplied 1 tlto N.Z. Automobile Union with a list of level crossings within the Wellington district, which it considers aro dangerous, and the union submitted the list to the General Manager of Railways, and your committee hopes that some improvements will bo made. "Members present at the annual meeting will be asked to set up a subcommittee to go into the matter of making satisfactory contracts for tho supply of benzine to members; also to consider a scheme of mutual insurance, bottl of which propositions have already been successfully accomplished by kindred associations."
