NOTES AND COMMENTS
JBr Giencob.T A final reminder is given owners and trainers that acceptances for the first day's handicaps at tho coming Welling-' ton Meeting close to-night at ,9 o'clock. Forfeits for the Champion Plate are due ,at the same 'hour. The'sensation of Saturday's racing at Caulfield would be tho defeat of Kilboy in tho Caulfield Stakes, weight-for-age, nine furlongs. Three-year-olds do not usually tale part in this race, as the race for the Guineas ia run the same day. Lavendo, wbo defeated the New Zoaland representative, is an imported horse, in the ex-New Zealander, Lou Eobertson's, stables. Last year ho won the Caulfield Cup, and was considered unlucky to lose the Melbourne Cup. He is engaged in both events this year, and looks a possible in either of; them.
Visitors are now commencing to put in an appearance at Trentham, and there should bo a busy scene at headquarters to-morrow (galloping morning). R. .J. Mason arrived from tho south yesterday with Nones, Bimeter, and Splenda'nt. G. Price is herewith Birkenvaie; Cease Eire, Panmure, Sedd-el-Bahr, Wapping, and Revalenta. J. H. Pressor goes over tomorrow with a team of ten horses, and a special train from Hastings will land nearly thirty. horses to-night. During the Dunedin Meeting, C. Emerson rode four winners, and is now at the head of the list of winning riders. It is generally thought that premier position for the ensuing season will lie between Emerson, A. Reed, and W. Bell.
Ettrefred, who defeated Wolaroi in the Caulfield Guineas on Saturday, is a halfsister to that good mare, Traquette. Last year she won the Maribyrnong Stakes at the Melbourne Cup Meeting.
Thrice, a place-getter in the Debutante Stakes at Caulfield, is a full-brother to Three, who raced successfully in the Dominion last season.
The Cesarewitoh Stakes, which is oiie of the big handicaps of the back end of the racing season in England, is/to be run on October 18. Tho.race closed with 60 entries, and of these Mr. R. Wootton's 6table is represented by Mr. E. Hulton's Green Falcon, and Mr. J. Potter's Golden. Rule. The weights had not made their appearance when tho last mail loft.
One of those omissions so appreciated by the "woolbrokers," but so exasperating to, backera (has to bo noted in connection with the telegraphed list of acceptors for the Masterton Racing Clubs Spring Meeting. Jean Laddo, who won the Stewards' Handicap very easily, did not appear in the acceptances for that event sent out from Masterton.
Tho New Zealand Oup candidate, Mullingar, who has an engagement at Wellington on Saturday, is leaving Ellsrslie to-day, and will arrivo here to-morrow in charge of F. Stenning.
The local hurdle horse The Golfer has been engaged in tho jumping events at the Aiickland Racing Club's November meeting.
The handicaps for the C.J.C. Stewards' Handicap appeal' in .this issue, and will be eagerly scanned by sportsmen. ' The handicap is a much more flattering: ono than last year, when the top-weight, Chortle, was given 10st- lib., against 9st. slb. this time. Tho locally-owned Taringanmtu and Seadown are assessed as equal, and the pair are asked to concede 31b. to- Chakwana, Ssfc. lib. At this figure the Messrs. Riddiford's mare must bo accounted nicely in.
