NOTES AND COMMENTS
[Br Glekcoe.l Owners are reminded that acceptances for the first day's handicaps at the coming Trentham meeting closo on Monday night, at 9 o'clock. The Victorian Amateur Turf Club's meeting will commence at Caulfield today. Several Now Zealand horses are engaged, and the Aucklander, 'Master Rogal, will probably make his first public appearance in Victoria in tho Hurdles. Eleven youngsters from the Waikanao Stud will go up for sale at Christchurch during tho Cup carnival. Amongst tho number is a full 6ister to Besant (Bezonian—Snowohell), who brought 750gns. at the Randwick Easter sales. Weights for tho C.J C. Stewards' Handicap are due on Monday. Mr. W. G. Stead has a double reason to be pleased over Kilboy's win in the A.J.C. Derby, as ho purchased a yearling full brother at the last November sales for lOflgns. This yearling now looks to have been a great bargain. Snub, winner of the big handicap at Wingatui yesterday, has earned a 51b. \penaltr for the New Zealand Cuii. In reference to somo auverse comment which has been passed on the Railway Department over tho train arrangements for the Opaki meeting, tho Department ofiicials point out that tho Wellington train was held back at Masterton to Trait for the second train from Opaki, which carried 60 odd passengers, who, owing to the last race having been started late, missed tho first train, and had it not been for the delay referred to these excursionists would have had to spend tho night in Mastorton. Despite the delay, the train reached Lambton Station on time. Ascalaphus, who scored at Wingatui vesterday, is a three-year-old full brother to Vagabond, winner of the Hastings Stakes. He is by Martian from Gipsy Girl by Gipsy Grand—Marion by Harlbyrnong—Peeress. The spring meeting of tho Wellington Racing Club will commence on Saturday next, and will bo concluded on tho following Monday (Labour Day). The latest entrant to como into tho market for tile New Zealand Cup is tho Gisborne-owned but Ellorslie-trained Merry Roe On Saturday last the Soult maTe ran a very. oreditablo trial over twelve furlongs. Another Aucklander in llulhngar is also pleasing his supporters by the way ho is getting through his tasks on the tracks. Owing to cabled advice that a brother of the owner had beon killed in France tho Bezonian maro Strugglo was withdrawn fron; her Masterton engagements. A pleasing' feature of the Dunedin meeting, which opened yesterday, was tho success of the local owaer, Mr. H. Whit, ney, who scored with the New Zealand Cup candidate Rose Pink, and the two-year-old filly Trentham Rose. By winning tho Dunedin Stakes the last named retrieved her refutation for speed, aid showed that her form at Kurow the week previous, was all wrong. This is tho second lime that the local owner has won his event, as Aema credited him with it in 1909, but did no good subsequently. Tho victory of Snub m the Mosgiel Handicap at Wingatui will bring the Martian gelding into favour'for the New Zoaland Cup, in which he saw a short price lost year, but was scratched at the eleventh hour in favour of his stable companion Warstep, who, however, failed to gain a place. Snub later on contested the Auckland Cup, and finished third with 6st. 131b. Ho afterwards ran unplaced in tho Wellington and Dunedin Cups. TIIO Signalman mare Ivooya and her stable companion have been 6ent on to Caulfield, and will raco in the jumping events at 1 the forthcoming meetings at Caulfield and I'lemington. Owing to somo misunderstanding there was no stipendiary steward in attendance at tjie Masterton meeting. It appears that tho secretary to the Racing Conference expected tho chief stipendiary to be back from Sydney in time for the meeting, but that official will not arrive until Monday next.
