Since last Sunday night, up till Wednesday morning, a practically continuous rain has been recorded in Auckland, and this has been accompanied by one of the , heaviest fogs on the sea that coastal masters have ever experienced. _ The Mission steamer fiouthern Cross, which ca'me into Auckland on Wednesday, had been in the fog for four days,- and Captain Buhgcss reported that it was the heaviest fofr ho has ever seen. Ships have been delayed nt the port for days owing to the heavy rain not allowing them to finish urn loading operations. Most of the vessels delayed v.-ere oversea liners, and included the Vermont, Port Napier, Booral. and Turakina, and also a number of coustal steamers. The recent fogs have also .been a, moans of bringing up the matter of the need of a. light on the Throe Kings at Auckland. Captain Croft,, of the Victoria, which was delayed on the voyage through having to steam slowly when neariug the coast on account of the fog, stated that tlio presence of cither a beacon or a. fog-signal on the Three Kings would be of undoubted assistance to ships' officers. It was -not so ranch a matter of time to ho sn,ved —although if captains knew that, there was a beacon or a- fog-signal they could make'a direct set for the Three Kinirs— hut it was more a question of safety- The Three l Kings was undoubtedly a dangerous spot, and he considered that something should be done immediately to warn vessels when nearlng the coast in their vicinity.
