■ MASTERTON MEETING MANIAEOA WINS THE SPRING HANDICAP By Telesra.pli.—(Special Correspondent.) Mastorton, October 1%. The' Mastorton Racing Club's Spring Meeting was held to-dnyin fine but dull weather, the course being heavy. The attendance was good. Tho totalizator handled .£15,581, against .£15,515 last year. The Trial Stakes was an open race judging by the machine, as several of the runners wcro well backed. At- the start Miss Sation went out in front, with Aohia and Sabana next. Entering the straight Probation ranged up to ■ the Awapuni horse and soon settled him, but oyer the last bit Black Lake finishedstrongly and Txjat the Down6kiro mare. Aohia was close up, and then came Miss Sation and Sabana. The winner is a half-sister to Blue Lake, a prominent sprinter of a couple of seasons back. With the scratching of Splendidus, the Fordell-tiaiiicd Perrier, who dTew the fence, was a good favourite in tho Telephone Hack Handicap. "He jumped out well, and after going a furlong was clear of the field, but at the turn into the Straight Thoughtful ran up to him with his head in his chest, and in the run homo nothing could .extend the chestnut .gelding. Captain Glossop finished well in. second place, and tho favourite was a podr third. Lady • General,' when going well behind Perrier, stopped and mick'ed, finishing last. At the start of tho Flying Handicap, Rewi Poto jumped out first, but. could : not ihead off Elation, who led' for a couple of furlongs, when Hushabye took up the 'running. She was headod by Master Achilles-before the straight was entered. , Goldstream, who had been slow to. move, then-took, charge, but shortly afterwards was headed by Lady .Black. The top-weight came out at tho half-distance, and won: nicoly by a neck. Goldstream was closo up, and then came Hushabyo. •■ Miacara was tailed off in the first part, and failed to go well at any part 6i the race.. Montana was tho elect in the big Handicap, but none of the top-weights showed up at all. Gold Sonlt was out first, and led for a.furlong,.when Mystified ran through the field .and had a big" break down, the back. At'the five-fur-longs, Orleans ran to the leader, and Gold Sonlt arid Merrie Gain moved up across tho bottom. Entering the'straight Montana and Herrie Gain, showed out, and the next to become prominent was Want. Inside-' the distance Haniaroa shot out, and, beautifully handled, ho won nicely by a length. Merrie Gain was' close up, and then came Montana and Orleans. ' The' Ladies' Purse was rather a soft snap , for the. .Poxton-trained Kurapai, who was ridden by Mr. Leslie M'Lonald. Matlock was in charge at the bottom of the Etraight, and looked all over a winner, but ho. failed to withstand a strong challongo by Kurapai. .Confusion was a fair third. Ulysses, To Opai, and Maraetotara showed. up. well .for six furlongs, but after that the'trio were done with, ''" : .

Backers were'astray in tlie Masterion Hack Handicap, when Amity, who now runs in tho colours of the Wellington, sportsman, Mr. Kirkdale-, took charge at the. bottom of- the straight, and won very easily from the Trentham-trained Mascot: Sir Fisher was- a.- poor third, and the remainder w,ere ■ badly strung out. The favourite was Golden- Grafton. She had every ©hance to win, being well placed throughout, but in. tho : straight she faded right out of it. Nothing but George was inquired for in, 'tho Stewards' Handicap, and tho Porirua horse started. tho hottest order of the day. He shaped very disappointingly, and after looking like a winner at the turn for home ho faded out of it, and could only finish sixth. Amber and White set a fast pace, and, followed by tho favourite, led.to the-straight, entrance, where Jean Laddo and Bradamante ran through. The top-weight looked dangerous at the distance, but the weight found him out, and Jean laddo won easily from'; Bradamante. BinaWo was three lengths away, and then came Sir Solo,. Hushabye, ''/and George.' ""."'.. The • scratching pen was freely, used in the concluding event. The Hastingstrained Multanowas a good favourite, while there was plenty of support for Spectual and Hinetoa, a full-sister !.to Toa Tere. When, the barrier was released, Speotual soon shot to the front,, and, followed by Multame, led into 'the straight.- Here the latter was done with, and Spectual, finishing strongly, won easily from Merrie Poto and Need.
