EASTERN EXTENSION COY.
OABLE STATION IN WELLINGTON. For some two or three years past it has been practically decided by the Eastern Extension Cable Company to change the landing place of its Tasman Sea cable from Wakapuaka (near Nelson) to Titahi Bay (near Ponrua), and from there conduct it by land into. Wellington city. That much was announced some two years ago, during a visit to Wellington of Mr. Webster, manager for the company in Australasia. Part of the laud cable has arrived, and the laying of that portion will bo commenced almost immediately. The company has secured tho top fiat in Nathan and Co.'s building in Featherston Street as a receiving station, and all messages to and from Australia will be dealt with there, instead of being transmitted at Wakapuaka as at' present. Cablegrams for transmission "via Eastern" will still ba received at the General. Post Office, whence they will bo. transmitted by means of an aerial tube. It is interesting to recall that for forty-ono years the company's cable station has been at "Waka," and that up till the time the Pacific Cable Board came into existence it was the only means of communication with the outer world. The landing place was fixed at "Waka because at that time the bulk of the population of Now Zealand was in the South Island, and most of the headquarters of commercial firms were located in Dunedin.
