RAIDER EMDEN RECALLED

ONE OF HER. PRIZES IN . WELLINGTON. Of much more than usual interest was the arrival of the Gryfevale from New York on Wednesday. This vessel was tctivoly concerned in one of the escapades of the German cruiser Emden, shortly before the cruiser was put out of action. About, the end of September, 1914, after the Emden had done considerable damage in the Indian Ocean, 6he one day sighted the Gryfevalo, and signalled that the crew wereto leave the vessel preparatory to being torpedoed. Finding/however, that the Gryfovale was empty, the commander of the Emden decided to put the crewa of the vessels ho had previously sunk, namely, the Pumedic, King Lud, : R.iberia, and Coyle, on the Gryfovale, and to lioep her by him to receive the crews of any vessels that he might deal with in the same way. Finally, however, ho decided that the vessel was in his way, and putting her in the charge of Captain D. Clinton, at that time first officer of the Gryfevale, he dispatched her with the five extra crews for Colombo, where she arrived safely. It appears that the reason _ that the vessel is afloat to-day is owing to the. fact that she was empty at the time. Another matter of interest in' tfo vessel is that she was at New York at the lime of the. recent explosions in the port. Speaking ■■ to_ a Dominion representative, last evening, the first' nffinor. Mr. T.'-A. .TnmTKinn. stated +hot! he was awakened by a loud crash, and at first, thought that the vessel had been' run down. Looking out he saw what was the cause of the disturbaWce. The whnbvnlace was in a blaze, and powder and bombs were exploding in all direction: Mr. JiprWu nl«n s f at»d +hat a great' amount of care. was needed in letting people aboard in N»w York; and; that a man had to produce yerv fond, reasons before he was sllowerl near tho ship. One man, he said, had been followed hMf-wny through America, and* had finally been arrested, trying to' board the Gryfovale. '
