A Press Association -telegram from Napier announces tho death from heart failure of Captain Pettersen, of the steamer Rum. The late Captain Pettersen was fifty-seven years of age. All acquainted with him will regret to learn of the death of Mr. A. Gardiner, track superintendent for the Wellington Tramways, which occurred suddenly last evening. The deceased, who was 52 years of age, has suffered from an affection of the heart for some time past. He recently went to Nelson for a rest, and returned this week apparently in good health, but expired suddenly whilst at tea in his home in Adams Street, Brooklyn, shortly after 5 p.m. Mr. Gardiner was engaged originally in Wellington by the firm which constructed the Wellington tramways, and when the contract was completed he entered the service of the City Corporation. He leaves a wife, but no family. . . Mr. Sidney Lambort died suddenly on Tuesday night at his residence, Lyall Bay, oil the eve of his' 64th birthday. His health had not been satisfactory for 6ome time, and when ho arrived home on Tuesday evening he complained of not'feeling weir enough to go'hack to work. Shortly afterwards he became ill, and died before medical assistance' could bo obtained. Deceased was lor many years employed in the Land and Income Tax Department, and was a prominent howler.

By private cablegram yesterday Mr.. W. H. Cos received word that his third son, Sergt. John pox, who loft with tlio Ist Battalion, Itiflo Brigade, has been wounded in Franco, and is progressing favourably. At the Wesley Church. Sunday School annivorsary last evening a presentation of a gold medal was made to Mr. R. P. Hatch, who has done sixteen years' continuous service at. the school. Altogether, Mr. Hatch has a record of forty-three years' Sunday school teaching "in England, Australia, and Now Zealand.

Mr. H. N. Liardet, general manager in New Zealand of.'tho Ocean Accident and Guarantee Corporation, has been advised of the death in Franco of his son Liout. Leonard Maughan Liardet, of tlio New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. Lieut. Liardet, who was 24 years of age, was born at Stratford, and was educated at the High School in that town, subsequently studying law at Victoria College. For some time he was on the staff of the Accident Insurance Co., and was in tho office of Messrs. Bell, Gully, Bel] and Myers when ho enlisted. From an early age he took a. keen interest in militray, matters. When 12 years old' he was bugler in the Stratford luounted .Rifles, of which his father was then captain. He took a keen interest in the cadetcorps. Before leaving Stratfonl hewas a lieutenant in the District High School Cadots. Ho ■ accompanied his parents to Wellington in 1908, and attained the rank of 2nd lieutenant in the sth Wellington Regiment. Ho went to Samoa with the Expeditionary Force, and on returning to Wellington ho joined the 2nd Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, with which lie left for Egypt as a Ist lieutenant. In April last he went to Franco, whero ho was wounded in the Battle of Flers on September 16. Death occurred in the 20th General Hospital at Camicros. While in Egypt the deceased, who was a very popular officer, was placed in chargo of the bombers. The name of Lce.-Corporal Hugh Barr, son of the Hon. J. Barr, M.L.C., of Redcliffs, Christchurch, appears among those wounded in France on September 27.

Lce.-Corpl. Douglas Yeats, who' went away with the Fifth Reinforcements, has cabled to his father, Mr. D. M. Yeats, that he has been wounded in the ri«ht shoulder. . A cablegram has been received by Mrs. Lo Marchand, of Wellington, notifying that her youngest son, Pte. Hector Walker, was wounded in Franco and admitted to hospital on September 27. No particulars aro yet to hand except mention of a wound in the right foot ami back. Pte. Walkor is a Victorian, but enlisted with tho Canterbury Infantry, and left with tho Seventh Reinforcements on October 9, 1915. . After five months of servico in Egypt, ho wont to Franco last April. Ho is a stepson of tho late Colonal Lo Marchand, of tho Royal Bengal Artillery, who was well known in military circles in Australia and India, and brother-in-law of Captain A. Davies, Wellington Harbour Board. Mr. George Hutchison, returned to Waneaniil on Monday after a seven months' visit to England. When in England ho obtained' permission to visit llto battlefields of I 1 ranee. 'He also visited Reims, and was at Pozieres, whero, among other trophies, lie secured a discarded German helmet. Miss Katherino Goodson, the eminent English virtuoso of the pianoforte (and pupil of the great Theodore loshcfcissfcy), will arrive in Wellington this evening. Her husband, Mr. Arthur Hinton, will commence the practical examinations of students for R.A.M. degrees to-morrow morning.
