GIVEN A CHANCE Mr. L. G. Jleid presided, at yesterday's sitting of tho Magistrate's Court. A plea of guilty was entered by Mr. P. W. Jackson on behalf of Thomas Ritchie, alias Veitch, alias Wilson, who appeared to answer a charge of- being an idle and disorderly person, he having consorted with reputed thioves. Counsel asked for leniency, and said that although his client had several convictions against him ho had had nono for tho particular class of offonce with which ho was charged Binco 1909. Quite recently Ritchio had onlisted, and ho was to bo called up next week. Latoly he had been endeavouring to sell bis hawker's turn out, with'tho result that he had come into touch again with his old associates. Previous to this Ritchie had been trying to live fairly decently. . , Inspector Hendrey, in corroborating what Mr. Jackson had said, stated that if tho man woro allowed to go into a military camp to gain his self-respeot it would be better than sending him to gaoll The Magistrate: I think so, too. I will adjourn'tho matter for a week to see if accused goes into camp. Turning to Ritchie, His Worship said that ho would bo released on his own promise if he reported progress to Inspector Hendrey. ' Under tlio War Regulations, a, middleaged woman named Elizabeth Scott, alias Mary Mudgway, alias Mary LouiGa Scott, was sent to prison for tlii'OO months for loitering in Wakefield Street for the purpOßes of prostitution. Alfred John Ncilson was fined 10s., in defauH three days' imprisonment, for insobriety. Three young boys, two of whom were brothers, appeared in the' Jnvenilo i Court to answer a charge of having damaged certain property at Island Bay belonging to. Hugh D. MacCarthy. After hearing evidence, the Magistrate ordered each of the boy's parents, to pay the sum of £1 19s. Id. towards the damage done. _ Another young boy received the sum of 7s. from another boy, knowing it to have been dishonestly obtained, and he was convicted and ordered ,to come up for sentence if called upon.
