CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH
1 FOUNDATION STONE OF NEW . EDIFICE .LAID. ' : Tlio foundation stone of tho new Congregational Church in 'Cambridge Terrace/to replace the old building now demolished in Courtenay Place, was laid on Saturday afternoon 1 . The cercmony was attended by ahout 150 of the' 'congregation, and a number of minis-' .tors of other , denominations were , pre-! .sent.' The Rev: Archibald E. Hunt presided, and generally ordered the de- . votional exercises and the other proceedings. The act of laying the. foundation' stone of the church was performed by tlic Hon. G. Fowlds, Tvho was present- : cd by the'architect, Mr. W. Fielding, with _a silver trowel, and by the ibuilder, Air. Davison, with'-a mallet; in honour .of the occasion. Mr. W. G. Holdsworth . laid the foundation, stone, of- the new iSunday School, adjoining the church . building. ,JBoth gentlemen -congratuLitcd tho congregation on progress made. 1 . The Rev.. A. ■ E. Hunt-, made a statement on. tho finances of ;tlio congregation as, affecting the building of tho . new church, and; read a brief historical account of the foundation* of ~the church in Courtenay Placets growth and development, and the circumstances ivhicli rendered it ! necessary, to move from Courtenay Place to', a more suitable site, where a lrailding more in keeping with the needs' of. the. congregation could be obtained. : Referring to the site, he acknowledged indebtedness to Vh M v Lewis,had mado it available on extremely advantageous - terms to the, congregation. The cliurch, he said, -would cost appVoximately £8200. 'from the proceeds of the sale of the Courtenay Place property there .would-bo abdut £7800 in hand,-'leaving' • an approximate deficit of £400. Against this there had been"several , generous, donations,- . including one; of £100 from; Mrs. M. A. Williams. Mr. Hunt read a-..letter from Mrs. Williams, covering her cheque for this amount, and expressing, congratulations and .good' .'wishes. A letter from the Mayor, expressing his regret that he could not: bo -present, was -also -read. Mr.- Luke, en- ' : closed a cheque for £2 2s. A letter from .a former parishioner, "Mr-' "A.'
